Hi all, I'm back looking for some assistance with cool banded something. Found in Southern WI within glacier wash. Rock is hard ~6-6.5 and is non-magnetic. Rock is ~7x3x5 depending on the rocks orientation Thanks for looking. Ken...

Looks like a quartzite to me. I've got some from SoCal and AZ that looks similar.

I have several of these all with different levels of banding and most are variants of purple and violet.
I would assume they take a polish well since they have a glassy feel when cut but I have yet to see first hand.

Since I do not have a tumbler, and no practical experience, I will leave it up to you all to see how well this rock polishes.
For anyone who is interested, I will provide the Baraboo layered quartzite rock for polish testing.
I will sent out three rocks (Let me know what size) to anyone who's interested. We can then all compare the outcome and, if you can, send me back one of the polished rocks in return.
PM me with the shipping details and I will start cutting this weekend.

If that is Baraboo Quartzite it might be a new discovery. Last I heard, it was only documented near Devils Lake and in Rusk County. Mine came from Rusk County.

I must have failed to mention the source is close to the Baraboo bluffs\Devils Lake area You just need a kayak, some dry weather, and good tick repellent. Just south of Portage on the Wisconsin River there are a number of islands and channels (outside bend) which have been fruitful. Most are covered in sand so grab a good 4' hiking stick to help locate them.

Yes that is Baraboo Quartzite. West of Baraboo at Rock Springs there is the old Pink Lady Mine. Across the road there is a park that has ripple marks standing on edge where they were folded when the Baraboo syncline was formed. The are 87 deg off horizontal.

nursetumbler - I have only trekked solo. My friends think I like rocks a bit too much and I have not connected with any other rockhound locals as of yet.
