jamespIt does James! The poor lot-o never sits empty or idle lol. Neither does the rotary for that matter. I need to get another rotary. I only run things in the first stage 60/90 in the rotary and am on batch 4 now and 13 complete runs in the lot-o since May 13th when I started. Another rotary would do me well.

Once you master the tumbling process it all goes great. No Fear ! Some folks really get challenged by tumbling. Same vibe game with me, the rotary only does step 1, the vibe does all the rest after the rotary with 60/90 or even coarser grit like SiC 45 or even 30. It's like the rotary is a whole different process. One Lot-O should keep up with rotaries totaling 20 to 25 pounds of rock. You really can't have too many rotary tumblers.

Nice. I like the ones that look like smoky quartz.

ashley What is it you don't like about the agates? I wonder if you tumble them separately from any other rocks how they would do. As a side note, I've mixed in my marbles in the 220 vibe run I'm now doing. I was waiting on some more ceramics to show up and thought it would be a good time to go ahead and test them. I guess they aren't really marbles, but rather those flattened multi colored marble-like globs you get from Michael's, etc... They are marble-ish I guess.

markbThey got banged up a bit, and probably could have been in the rotary longer. I will do the next batch all agates. Thats cool! How are they working?

I especially like the first agate you posted with all the horizontal lines. It looks like a rainbow. Which type of agate was that one? With some agates, I think it’s definitely hard to figure out when you want to take them out of stage1. I’m tumbling some Crowley’s Ridge agates I collected, and some of them are so oddly shaped, I don’t know what to do with them. But I think you did a great job with yours. markb I’m interested to hear how using the marbles worked, too!

ericabelleThank you Erica! the agates were gambiri and coyamito agates. I’m not the best at ids but I would guess that one was a coyamito. Starguy Brent might be able to confirm the id. Looking forward to seeing your agates!

ashleyericabelle I was running a 220 Sic batch in the vibe with a mix of 6.5-7 mohs rocks, plus a couple raggedy agates. They looked like beach agates that were full of pits and had a bit of host material left on them in the pits. I stopped the run 6 hours short of 48 hours and all the rocks seemed to shape up pretty well. Several of them were redos that I had previously taken to polish, but didn’t like their end condition they were in because I had left some rough areas and scratches. So I put them back into the 220 run to shape them up better another time around. Some of the agates were also redos, but a couple of the medium sized ones had just run through the rotary and we’re due for a 220 run. They came out shaped a bit better than I’ve seen in the past, and although they still had their pits several seemed to be lessened, or perhaps widened out a bit. There is still a slight trace of what I assume is host material in the pits, but not as bad as before and I will most likely pass them on to the next stage. In the run I also mixed in about 1/3 of 3/8 x 5/8” sized ceramic pieces ( previously used several times before) and some mini ceramics. The minis were getting too small to use and we’re floating around on the top of the rocks in the vibe bowl, so I mixed in the marbles because I didn’t have any more larger ceramics. These marbles are the kind you get from Michael’s that are flat on the bottom, not traditional round marbles. I bought three batches of them at a garage sale this summer for $1 apiece. The marbles came out about the same size, but were scuffed up to a matte finish as would be expected. However, they all held up and no chipping was observed. I have some in a rotary tumble that I’m doing too, but won’t see the results of those until Sunday. I don’t have proof that a marble will provide a “softer” tumble than the small gravel rocks I typically use, but that was my theory.. The 220 run in the vibe may not cause such damage, but I didn’t want to take a chance. Usually when I get a batch to the pre-polish and polish stages, I’m relying on the smaller rocks in the run to fill between the medium sized and larger ones, rather than using small gravel rocks. I also add in about 1/3 ceramics to these two last stages. If you decide to try marbles, the good news is they are pretty cheap if you shop around. I looked on the web and found you could get 50 marbles at Hobby Lobby for $2.99, or 160 at Amazon for $11.90 and other places for good prices, including Etsy, Amazon, and other retail outlets. Another kind of glass piece that I bought at the summer garage sales was one shaped like a boomerang. I haven’t thrown them into a tumble yet, but would think they would do just fine. Another test for the future Perhaps. markb. 😎

markbGreat experiment! I like how cheap the marbles are, and I also like the fact that I wouldn’t have to smooth out any rough edges on them before using them in the vibe. My new ceramic media has really sharp edges, so I run those for a week in the rotary tumbler with the stage 1 rocks to smooth out the edges. I could probably run them in the vibe by themselves with the 220 grit to do the same thing, but my vibe is always going and always several loads behind.

I agree they may be easier to use over sharp ceramics, and you don’t have to prepare them to use. Now the question is how long will they last and hold their size in comparison to my larger ceramics. That may take a while to figure out.

markbWell of your rocks and marbles of course! I think I know what your talking about. My girls like to buy the colored glass marbles like that at the dollar store, but I’m not 100% sure its the same thing.

I think they must be the rounded colored glass that people use as vase filler. Is that what they are, markb ?

markb Well of your rocks and marbles of course! I think I know what your talking about. My girls like to buy the colored glass marbles like that at the dollar store, but I’m not 100% sure its the same thing. Rocks have been sorted back to 220 rerun and 500 containers, so nothing to show. Since I didn't have before pics, you wouldn't be able to see any differences anyway. The glass gems that your girls like from the Dollar Store are the ones! They are flat on the bottom, and although not real round marbles, are similar. I had a mix of smaller sizes. Below is a pic of what I put into the stage, plus the odd shaped ones that I haven't tried yet: The pic below is what my new unprepared ceramics look like vs those I've been using for several weeks. If you are going to go ahead and use ceramics, I think buying the tiny pieces is a real waste of money since the bigger ones will eventually become smaller. The tiny ones are not shown in the picture, but the RS sells them. Also, remember my experience of the tinies floating around on top of the rocks in the vibe, not down among the rocks where you want them. This last pic is what our Dollar Tree store offers, the best price I've seen yet.
