I have saw the foundries with the graphite Crucibles that can get to 2500F and it got me thinking, what would happen if you melted Rocks in one? Most Rocks melt at 2400F or less(so says google), so it should get hot enough to melt rock. My thought it what would happen if you say melted down some Agates, jaspers,Amythest, quartz, obisidan, etc mixed together and then cooled down into a rock? Just at thought, Might get a foundry someday and try it out just to see what happens.

I think you'd have a mess! LOL - I'm no genius...and have no basis for what I'm about to say...but if it were possible, wouldn't you just get a bunch of "lava rock" afterward?

Aside from some pretty severe explosion risk, it would at least be educational. There will also be stuff that burns mixed in with the stuff that melts, so a kiln that you can remove all oxygen from would be advisable, and hope that none of whats in there is a peroxide. Prior to melting you would want to at least crush the mixture to 1/4 minus to minimize air pockets to explode, and run through a few lower temp heat cycles to remove any humidity. Personally I would get familiar with glass first before trying stones.

Oh ya totally i was thinking more using all the various chips that come off during tumbling the stuff less than 1/32 in thick, and grinding/crushing it to a coarse powder before putting it in the crucible.

Techinally, yes molten rock is lava but it would be unlike any naturally occuring lava due to the blend of different stones. I highly doubt it would come out the other end as obsidian or porus lava rock, but I too am no genius and could be wrong.
