Just checked out Gemstone:Tumbling, Cutting, Drilling, & Cabochon Making from Jim Magnuson as well as his book Agate Hunting Made Easy. These are great up to date books with full color photos.

I had a hard time finding the book after my original copy went missing. I consider it an essential resource. After some digging I found it's been republished as "Rocks and Minerals" in he Peterson Field Guides series.

I find myself reaching for the Audubon Field Guide to Rocks and minerals on a regular basis. It's nice and compact. I also have the Arem and Schumann gem references and use them with some regularity. I'd like to find a good test for understanding crystallography, refraction, diffraction, and pleochroism better. Any suggestions?
