Most of the time my girdle is more like 1/3 of preform thickness because they're cut for a bezel setting.

Girdle marker consisting of a large aluminum rivet in a hard plastic that is threadable, with a bolt to act as a set screw for the rivet, that way height is adjustible and I can do it front or back side down depending on if I dop it first. I have also made a couple from hardwood with a glued in insert for the threads.
