I love the Dop clock idea khara. Fun. I guess eventually you'll just have to keep trading them out for better & better ones. Makes me want to make a Rock clock for my shop - buy what stones for what hour -hmmmmmmm. I have to think on that one. I mean, what is 5:00 ? ( quitting time- but what stone ?? ) Any ideas. Patty

Patty Is there a Beer Agate? khara - Yeah...that cab clock is awesome. I saw it originally, but didn't pay attention that it was missing a few stones...maybe because I'm a few stones short of a full load! LOL - I think that's a great idea on how to use your first cabs!!

My first "machine" was also an Inland. Was lucky enough to get a used Genie a few months later, though, so I know how happy your are.
That first cab looks just like some agatized pet wood we have here.
Ours is from Hubbard Basin, NV, but no way to say for sure where any wood is from just by the appearance of a single cab. The awesome shine on your cab reminds me of the way the stuff we have polishes, though.
Congrats on getting something you can really have some fun with.

Well I just checked and apparently there’s a Root Beer Agate! That’s my kind of beer.🤓

Thanks for your petrified wood thoughts. It’s good to know I’m not the only one who thinks it’s wood. I’ll be looking for more of it every time I dig through my slabs for sure! I am thinking about getting my Inland back out to use as a sort of flat lap. I’ve got all the disks and it’d be nice to make use of them. I know it won’t work for large slabs but maybe for polishing the face of some small to medium display pieces? It’s also got a great vertical cylinder grinder which makes a nice clean edge, if I ever find use for that…

khara - I used the Inland for flattening backs and slower-speed polishing for a long time after getting the Genie. Finally got a Hi-Tech a few years later, and that offficialy retired the Inland. The Inland motors back when I got mine ran a little slower, which was good, but yours can still be useful.
I did buy the 8" conversion for the flat lap, and found the extra room between the edge of the 6" laps and the spray shield to be a great thing. It allowed room for working the end of a dop stick down level with the lap for doing girdles without grinding fingertips. Those cabs you posted say you've already learned how to work the stones on the wheels quite nicely, though, so you probably won't be using the flat lap for any of that.

Your work station is legit! Nice job. Good looking cabs as well. I've taken over our mud room in the basement. Winter is much to long in north central New York for the garage.

Looks like a nice efficient corner you set up there. Got a scrap piece of rug for the floor? Cabs can be slippery little buggers and it’s only a matter of time . . . I agree, I grabbed some scraps of old kitchen vinyl flooring, it's easy to mop clean. I also notice your bench top is particle board, to stop it getting water affected, see if you can grab an advertising banner, the type real estate agents use, they are made of thick vinyl and are ideal waterproof table cloths for work benches. Nice looking cabs there.

dirtsifter Thank you! I am really loving it. It is quite nice to have a space all set up and ready to go when I have a few minutes to spare. I should post a pic of my winter upgrade we did earlier this winter. It's been quite an improvement! MsAli I didn't know it was Calico Lace until I made that cab! At about the same time someone else posted a pic of some here and I recognized it as the same material and they identified it for me. I quickly ordered a few more chunks as I only had the one small slab and don't know where I originally got it. Starguy Thanks so much! vwfence The purple and yellow is the Calico Lace agate. It tends to have really awesome botryoidals buried inside the clear agate! pauls Thanks for the ideas. I still haven't done anything about the floor. Unfortunately it is a thoroughfare and I actually sit on a stool behind a parked car to work, so just not an ideal place for flooring. I also continually slide the stool to be in front of the different wheels. I may come up with something some day. I had initially planned to put a plastic picnic tablecloth on the bench top but then found a scrap piece of melamine so that's what I used but your comment makes me think maybe sealing the edge of it would be good.

vwfence That’s a nice stock of material! I hope you’ll post some pics of some cabs that you cut. I have one more from my original slab preformed, I should finish that. And then the rough material I bought is small chunks that I’ll need to trim saw some slabs from.
