I'm collaborating with my husband to make a cell phone stand for possible Christmas presents.
They will be made out of aluminum, anodized & colored with a stone set in them.
The stand portion is a notch - so I'm trying to figure out how wide the notch has to be to fit over the majority of cell phones.
Mine, on the edge, with the case I have on, it is approx. 5/8" .
How about yours ?

I was trying to vote twice (like in all good elections :-) ) because I checked both my phone and my wife's.
mine is 1/2" and my wife is 5/8".

Personal phone is .53"
Work phone is .51"
When I open the calipers to .63" (5/8 plus 5 thousanths") it seems to me to be a totally acceptable size, you could probably add about .100"to .125" radius to the front of the notch and it would mostly sort out any looseness. I would radius the back as well but only about .060 or use a 1/8" drill to locate it.

Mine is 1/2" but has small little "nubs" as protectors on the backside...so maybe an additional couple millimeters...

I voted for 1/2" but it's actually just a hair smaller. I have a Galaxy S20 FE with an Otterbox case (thin).

If you made the slot to fit the biggest size, wouldn’t I it fit all the sizes?
I have iPad holder made of wood. I like it. Metal with a stone sounds very very nice!

Mine is 5/8" with the case. It is an I Phone 12 Mini. Overall size is pretty small compared to most cell phones.

Thanks for everyone's input ( and jasoninsd for the nudge  ) , That's the exact idea Pat, to make it to fit the largest size, so I needed to know what that largest size is. It sounds like a slot slightly larger than 5/8" would accommodate most.
We're still in the design stage - we want a design that actually works.

My Samsung S20U with a hard case is 1/2" but the case was originally a tripod stand that broke off but it still has about another 1/8th raised surface where the stand used to be.
