I wanted to keep busy while cutting crazy lace so I looked for an "almost shaped" piece of something to play with on the slant lap. I thought this would work just fine. I played around with it for some time and this is what became of it. Guess I should have took a before photo of the rough. I am 100% tumbler so this was just playing around. Well Kelly, for just "playing around" it looks pretty good. Pick up some dead soft copper wire & start playing around with wrapping & you'll get that too

[br liveoak Patty thank you for the vote of confidence. Where would I get "dead soft copper wire"?

If you decide you like wire wrapping, it's MUCH cheaper to buy in bulk at Rio Grande
You also need 21 gauge 1/2 round / half hard for the bindings (wraps around the bundle that go around the cab.)

SHUT THE FRONT DOOR!! Way to go Kelly! I'm lovin' it!! It looks too purple to have found that here...but I do know there's Lepidolite here in the Black Hills. I haven't found any, but my brother-in-law found some and I cabbed a piece. jasoninsd WHAT?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? Thank you I am glad you like it. No I didn't find it when I was there but would have loved to. Finding the Fairburn was a find of a lifetime I couldn't be selfish and want to find Lepidolite also. I don't suppose you'd be interested in putting some pretty party clothes on her would you? I "could" and "would"...if you really want. However...my advice would be to hold onto this one and use it to do your first wrap with - or hold onto it and wrap it once you get comfortable with wrapping. There's going to be something special about wrapping your first cab. I still have the very first cab I made...and I still haven't wrapped it. It's sitting on the shelf where I have my Fairburns...in a place of honor. Is it my best cab? Not even close...but it's my first one. It will never be sold...and I'll probably wrap it so "I" can wear it...once I figure out how to wrap something less feminine! LOL

Great job on your first cab, especially using a stone like Lepidolite! If you can cab that, you can pretty much cab anything. Looking forward to seeing your wrap! Thank you hummingbirdstones I take it Lepidolite is a difficult stone to work with? I was planning on trying to tumble it. Should I not? I know its a soft stone but maybe if I am diligent and keep a really good eye on it it would be ok. I'll see. Either way you'll never know if you dont try. The reason it's tricky is because of the mica in it. It likes to flake off on occasion. Your piece is that nice dark purple color like the Wyoming Lepidolite we have. Vince cut a piece for me for a pendant I was making (here's the finished piece) and he had to be extra gentle so as not to pull a mica flake off. I don't tumble, but I suppose it could be done as long as you use a ton of cushioning.
