Any clear quartz stone with inclusions will make awesome doublets. Rutilated quartz is one of them.

Any clear quartz stone with inclusions will make awesome doublets. Rutilated quartz is one of them. Last night I was perusing images on Google of doublets...and saw numerous Rutilated Quartz pieces. I know Tony has some small pieces which would be in my price range...and I know he has some other that might be slightly out of my price range! LOL - I might go for some of the former and see what I can do with them! Any clear quartz stone with inclusions will make awesome doublets. Rutilated quartz is one of them. I do have plans on using some of my Velvet Obsidian as backing. I noticed while going through a bunch of the old threads on doublets, obsidian is mentioned several times being used as a backing. I also came across where someone backed a cab with an old CD. I'm dying to try that! The other one I want to do is backing it with a mirror...

A mirror is basically a coating on the back of glass and the coating will deteriorate. I'm sure you've seen old mirrors that have the black showing through at the edges, etc. I don't know how long it would take for that to manifest because I've never really looked into it. Another option for a backing could be dichroic glass or any of the colors in the goldstone family. Just thinking out loud (really through my fingers).

Jasoninsd, you might also try Devcon home Plastic Steel Epoxy dark gray as a backing. This material is sometimes used as backing on Turquoise like stones. Thin is sometimes very good because it sometimes unclutters the plume.

I have found out the hard way that CDs delaminate over time.

I'm not sure I would have thought to do that...but now that you mention the "deterioration" of the backing, that totally makes sense!! Hmmm...I do have green, blue, black, and gold colored Goldstone!! Another great idea! Jasoninsd, you might also try Devcon home Plastic Steel Epoxy dark gray as a backing. This material is sometimes used as backing on Turquoise like stones. Thin is sometimes very good because it sometimes unclutters the plume. Thanks Victor!! I tried to go as thin as I could on these doublets. The Nydegger wasn't the "best" really for a doublet as the plumes were SO thick. This time, they were "starters" just so I could go through the process...

I have found out the hard way that CDs delaminate over time. Interesting. I wonder if doing them as a "triplet" would eliminate that. Meaning...having a super thin backing, the CD, then the main stone. I would think that would "seal" the CD in the center. Now that I type that, I can see where the delamination would still occur...unless the girdle was epoxied in some way in order to keep the different layers from separating. Hmmm...gotta ponder that one for a bit...

Rich, thank you SO much for finding that! Totally makes sense! I looked up "First Surface Mirrors"...and they're not cheap by any means. Ed had mentioned his came from a copier. I know there's a copy machine repair place in town. I may have to stop by there and see if they have any as "junk parts"!

Dang jasoninsd those doublets are excellent! Especially for your first ones! That first one is really nice, it's crazy how the backing material can make the plumes really come to life.

Yeah, I think it's crazy the difference in how that first one looked when I first made the cab two years ago...versus backing it and grinding it wicked thin. Not patting myself on the back by saying this...but I think it went from a "nice" cab, to what I think of as an "elegant" looking cab.
