jasoninsd I did wonder about your girdle height having to be the radius of a Sharpie. This looks like it requires coordination, or a third hand. :-) Are you holding the Sharpie at the top center of the ruler where the little divot is and then both holding the square and also spinning the cab with the other hand? I must be tired...I don't understand what you mean by your first sentence... No. I use the top edge of the ruler to mark a small line on the cab...then turn the cab...then draw another short line...repeat until all the way around the cab. Trust me, if something required more than two hands, I'm definitely no good at it. LOL If you look at my picture...where you see the black "bleeding" onto the ruler...that's about how long of a line I draw before I turn the cab and continue the lines until I'm all the way around the cab...

khara those are both beautiful. On #2 if you’d put a second bead on the back of the bail it could be double sided! So pretty! jasoninsd this forum warms my heart. So many helpful people! Thank you! I’m not cabbing (yet), but seeing the creative use of tools really gets my brain going! Thanks!

I mark my girdle line differently.
Honestly it's something I read a bunch of times & thought it sounded hokey.
But it works.
First I take my caliper and measure the height of my would be cab and decide how tall to mark it in the first place.
I usually try for 2.5 mm. So I scratch a line on my stone or make a small dot.
Then I put the pre-form on my bench & with a fine line sharpie marker I mark it.
(pencil just doesn't seem to stay OR easy enough to see)
First I line up the sharpie with my scratch/dot & then I put another pencil (round object) under the end of the sharpie I'm using.
You move the sharpie up or down on the 2nd round object until the sharpie is positioned with the writing point on your first mark for your girdle & it's stable on the 2nd object.
Then you just rotate the stone & mark it , keeping your hand steady holding the sharpie.
Works for any size stone.
Works for me. Patty

LOL I meant to say earlier that in no way do I think my way is the only way...nor maybe the "best" way. However, it's the "best" way I've found for me. I like doing my girdle line on the slide square because there's absolutely no instability. I don't have to work to keep my hand steady...that way there's no doubt my girdle line is absolutely even with the bottom edge of the cab all the way around the perimeter.

Of course jasoninsd that goes without saying. I just thought I'd post how I do it & how it is comfortable for me,
so Khara can figure out the best way for her.

Yeah...I know why you posted what you did...and I was careful enough to put this as my first sentence: "I meant to say earlier that in no way do I think my way is the only way...nor maybe the "best" way." So, I'm not sure why it appears you're "calling me out" for something here...

jasoninsd and liveoak-- You have BOTH lost ME. I don't see where either one of you was off base- in any way. Me thinks y'all are reading too much into stuff.
And to muddy the water.... I don't mark my girdle, at all. Of course, that's gets me in trouble sometimes.... LOL! BUt, I've seen "Patty's" way a bunch of times. Jason, that's a new one on me. Not quite sure I understand it, but it clearly works for you.

Sure. You specifically tagged me stating the reason why you posted your way of marking the girdle. Your "passive aggressive" use of the words "I just thought I'd post how I do it" was a sly way to infer and take a shot at me that I had implied my way was the "right way" to do it! You didn't need to tag me on this. You specifically directed you comment AT me...rather than making it a general statement about your reasoning for posting your way of doing it was to help khara...which I thought just "went without saying"!

I think most of us find it easier to hold the Sharpie flat on the table and pad the cab up to mark it.
Also no problem marking inside curves this way.

Son Of Beach Similar but not quite how I do it, Chad. However, it does show exactly what Patty/ liveoak described.
