At least they were Jadeite...I thought for sure the link was going to be for small Obsidian cabs! LOL I absolutely love hearing other peoples take on these kind of matters. It's so subjective...and there's been views from all different directions! For me, I have to ponder whether I consider the cabs themselves to be designer...or does the setting in which they're placed elevate the cabs into the designer category because of the intricacy of the settings. Hmmmm.... I see it more like gemfeller mentioned, these rocks inspired a worthy setting. And the still own the show! LOL It's like when a supporting actor gets an Academy Award...but the star of the movie doesn't even get a nomination! LOL EDIT - Or the other way around! LOL

I'll concur with you on that! It may be a "simple" shape at the top...but there's a complexity to the cut...and the plumes are so well placed. That agate is super clear...I'd love to know what that material is!! I wish they had more info on the stone so I know what rough to keep an eye out for, good dendritic is pretty scarce. The other night...or very early morning...I can't keep track...I was going through the rough listings on eBay searching for "plume" listings. I didn't come across one in which I thought the agate was super clear. The Regency Rose I keep using for doublets has a "tint" to the agate...just enough to keep the Basanite from looking completely black...and all the listings I ran across looked like they had a similar "tint". I know the thinner I shape the dome, the clearer the agate becomes...but the listing you posted for that ring, the agate was completely clear.

Like others have said, it's search engine fodder. Let the pictures do the talking! It reminds me of the term "vintage" that was always used for guitar parts on another forum I've been on. It's a meaningless term that was used a lot. Everything that exists is vintage! I think any cab that is done by an individual artist, who is trying to make a unique piece is a designer cab. It's art. It's subjective. I don't think designating it as designer necessarily says it's good. I've seen fashion shows!

You hit the nail on the head with that one! The other night...or very early morning...I can't keep track...I was going through the rough listings on eBay searching for "plume" listings. I didn't come across one in which I thought the agate was super clear. I know the thinner I shape the dome, the clearer the agate becomes...but the listing you posted for that ring, the agate was completely clear. It occurred to me that dendritic inclusions also occur in quartz which is often clear, the stone in the ring could be an example of that. I see those tints as a bonus if they are a good color, the basanite really brings out the color in those translucent areas as well as making the inclusions pop. I still appreciate a really clear agate, and probably have some possibilities in moss agate. Great...now I have to expand my search parameters! LOL You're right about the tint. I think that's why it's cool to have different colored backing material. A lot of the Regency Rose/Graveyard Point has a slightly "yellow" tint to the agate. If a blue backing was used...I have an idea it would come out a greenish/blue. And if red is used, it might come out a slightly orange/red. Definitely something I'm going to pay around with...

I would say it is designer jewelry set with standard cabochons. Although, the material is very nice.

From listings cabs for sale, I have found that designer is just a self-important synonym for free form which is another synonym for asymmetrical. When I list on Etsy. I use the terms asymmetrical and free form but add a tag of designer. I usually try to cut a symmetrical template shape, but rock is rock and sometimes I end up with a cab that looks symmetrical but isn't and I use an asymmetrical description.
