Tela, I'm glad to hear your brother made it out of that unscathed...this time! (Sad to say!) I've never been big on peddle bikes...but I rode a Harley for many years. Was purposely run off the road one time...and two other times due to negligent drivers. I really do believe there are a TON of bikers (motorcycle) who are a huge problem...zipping in and out of traffic...cruising between lanes...not coming to full stops at stop signs. However, I really was a conscientious rider...so I didn't think I necessarily "deserved" the close calls. I don't understand how anyone could want to ride a motorcycle around here. Every time I turn around I'm hearing of someone who knows someone who just got hit. DH is working extra to cover for a guy that is STILL in the hospital. A friend of my daughter's father is an invalid. My daughter was a witness to a guy hitting someone on a motorcycle right in front of her. He just acting like the bike wasn't even there. Too many stories. My nephew got a Harley a few years ago. That scared me. He got remarried and the new wife put a stop to it. Thank G-od. Every biker I have ever known is like you, Jason. But, it only takes one idiot to ruin your day.

The lawsuit thing doesn't work out well if they don't catch the driver.

Yep......when you loose your confidence, loose your enjoyment, loose your nerve, or loose something physical required to maintain your agility........it's time to consider loosing the bike.......otherwise, it could be loose your life as you once knew it....if at all...!
I'll keep peddling for as long as I can maintain my physical and mental awareness.......or become a grill ornament on some old guys Buick.

Yep. For me it came down to a point of not being worth the risk...same reason I don't jump out of airplanes anymore! LOL

ha ha Joe
your safe I don't drive Buick !!!
altho I wish I did and had a couple in the past
i saw a T-bone accident with a Buick Endeavor
Some idiot kid In big old nasty full size crap truck
Struck this elderly lady on the driver side Probably at about 30 miles an hour The damage seemed extensive and foreboding on that driver door
How he did that was really idiotic
Altho this older lady seemed fine She was out of the car in no time Walking about a bit dazed
she must got out of the passenger door I came up on it about 4 minutes after it occurred
All I could think is that a sturdy safe auto ...

Sorry to hear about your brother. Glad he was not severely hurt.
Around here bicycles are very common. Many ride them miles to work, all months of the year. In Stevens Point there are lots of bicycle lanes. Most people observe them and are careful around bicycles.
My daughter and son in law ride bikes a lot. One of their favorite Summer rides is from their place to an ice cream stand. It is about 5 miles there. They have to ride on some 4 lane roads in Stevens Point. There are also turn lanes in areas. Most of these Streets have bicycle lanes.
They installed rear view mirrors and turn signals/stop lights on their bikes.
At first I was a little afraid, when they were pulling AJ in a pull behind child carrier. But, they have had no issues. He always wore a helmet and was strapped in. They had something like a car seat mounted in it, too.
My son in law has only had one issue with a car. He was riding bike in the country at the time. Going about 30 MPH, down a hill. A car tried to make a left hand turn when he was going past the road the car was turning onto. The driver noticed him and stopped, midturn. My son in law ended up hitting the brakes, and stopping too.
He walked over to the drivers window and showed his badge. Son in law was a police officer at the time. The driver opened his window. Son in law told him to be more careful and aware when driving.
They both went on their way.
With all the bicycles around here, I am very surprised there are not more accidents. We even have a major delivery services that uses bicycles. They have specialty trailers to transport hot and cold food.

Ed, they did that at the Courthouse Square in Prescott. I guess it's ok, but not optimal. When you're driving, being stuck at a stop light with those takes FOREVER. I think the tourists like it better because you can cross streets diagonally to get from one point to another instead of crossing 2 streets to get there. With all the tourists around there and the bars on Whiskey Row, I'm not sure it's any safer for anyone.

Looks like they don't have any salt and pepper on table. Could have been an irate customer.

As an older driver I am experiencing a number of drivers that are careless, impatient, impaired, on a device or simply don't respect the rights of others using the road. Austin is a bike city but has also become an electric scooter city with lots of accidents. I suggest being well insured even if you are in an accident that you didn't cause.

Here's one idea I've seen bicyclists use- get a handlebar mount for your cell phone or Go Pro camera, and run the video the whole time your biking every day. Not sure if you can just set it to do a continuous loop, or what kind of charger you'd need. But in the event something happens you have a record.

That's what he needs, for sure.
