Dillonf, I hunted topaz somewhere in the area of Streeter on Highway 377 in the creek beds that are cut by the road and are public property. Check around and see if any of the locals can help you. My wife found one nice clear topaz that was faceted and shown. That's Awesome! Will do!!

Trying to get some llanite. I found the spot but it’s very hard to break it up. I just had a rock hammer and a chisel but no luck. I saw someone mention a 12 lb sledgehammer. Guy at the rock shop said most loose stuff is decomposed so I wanted chunks off the big rock. Any other suggestions?

Yeah most of the loose stuff is decomposed, but not all of it - you can hit it with the rock hammer and if it doesn't crumble its probably good. That said, we had a bunch of decomposed stuff when we got back home. I had better luck getting big chunks on the east side of the road. We had a 3 foot crow bar, shovel, and some assorted hand tools rock hammer/pick ect. We hit up that spot twice and got a pretty good haul. Some were boulders we dug around then pried out. We did break a shovel doing that on the first trip. If it is still there - there should be a big 100+ lb chunk on the east side that people before me tried to dig/pry out and didn't get. I spent a bout 30-40 minutes on it and loosened it a bit to no avail. Someone will get lucky on that one down the road. Good Luck!! PM me and I can tell you some other spots we have hit up.

I went to the Llanite roadcut a few months ago with nothing but a rock hammer, a cold chisel and an old-fashioned grubbing or flat-weeding hoe that is known as an "aggie" by the field bosses and hoe squads in TDCJ. I was extremely successful in getting two 5 gallon buckets full of good quality Llanite within a couple of hours. My trick was to look for fracture lines in the big rocks and work on those areas with the rock hammer and chisel then take the aggie to dig and pry some of the Llanite out. I will be back out there when it cools down some with those same tools and a big sledgehammer that is flat on one side and beveled on the other. I expect to do even better this next go-around by working the fracture lines with that beveled sledgehammer.

Good rain chances and cooler temperatures this week means that I will be heading back to the Llano and Mason area for some good rockhounding soon. The rains will definitely expose some new material along gravel county roads and roadcuts all throughout that area.
