Hello All -
I have been reading this forum for a while, finally courageous enough to make an account given that I finally selected my rotary tumbler. Excited to learn more and be a part of the community.

Welcome from Idaho. What kind of tumbler did you choose bbearsrock? I decided to get a Lortone 33B. It seemed like a reasonable starter machine and a decent price compared to the lot-o vibratory tumbler. Hopefully all my supplies arrive this week and I can get started! Excited to post and share my first batch. Going to do a before and after following the instructions/ recipe from Michigan Rocks (YouTube channel) that originally got me interested.

Welcome from Southern Nevada. Also southern Nevada here! Do you have any recommendations for places to look for tumbling rocks?

Welcome from Southern Nevada. Also southern Nevada here! Do you have any recommendations for places to look for tumbling rocks? Not much locally. There is a lot of chalcedony out towards the lake, but mainly a grayish color. In the same area there is a spot with a lot of garnet in quartz, garnet amphibolite, garnet gneiss. some chlorite quartz and a few others. Also a lot of actinolite (asbestos) in the area. Great for specimens, but not tumbling. The spot is not real easy to reach though. Need to drive up a wash, then park and hike maybe a half mile or so.
There is more chalcedony scattered about places around Las Vegas, but I don't know of any concentrated areas with anything good. Most the really good collecting starts a couple hours from Las Vegas.
Keep in mind that there is not much open to collecting in Southern Nevada. Most the land is private, claimed, BLM leased land to gun ranges, military, Nevada Test Site, National or State park, area of critical concern, Tule Springs National Monument and most recently the Spirit Mountain National Monument. There is very little area in Southern Nevada left where rock collecting is allowed, and most of what is left sucks.
For tumbling material, the best you are going to find in Southern Nevada is up around the Goldfield District. Otherwise, Arizona is good around Burro Creek and Oatman. And Southern California there is the Cadys and Afton Canyon, which is the BLM is currently trying to close off to collecting by creating another National Monument that will take up the last little good collecting areas down there that has not been made in to a monument yet.
Don't know what part of Southern Nevada you are in, but our club here in Las Vegas has a trip planned to the South Cadys the Saturday after this Saturday. Was supposed to be this weekend, but got rescheduled for June 17th.

Good choice on the 33B. They’re pretty durable and you gain a lot of flexibility with two barrels.

Yea, most local places in Southern Nevada are protected one way or another, and of course for important reasons. Las Vegas is local for me too! I didn't know there was a local club out here, would like to get more info if you have any to share. The trip sounds incredible! Have a blast, I sadly cant make that, but in the future would be interesting in going.
