As many of you know and many of you may not know- a good friend and fellow RTHling, Ed "Mohs" Arnaud, passed away. We have been raising money to, at first, have his remains taken care of, then get a memorial plaque or brick at his local zoo. Everyone who donated during that drive is on a PM thread about it. Collectively, we have decided to raise the remaining needed to purchase a bench with a plaque. So, a series of auctions will be running for a few months to finish raising 2000 more. We already have alllllmohst 3000.
If anyone would still like to pitch in without winning an auction, contact a staff member, specifically, aDave since he is collecting the funds.
Thanks guys! You do know you're the greatest, right??

Hi there! My name is Ashley and I work at the Phoenix Zoo. I've spoken to Patty a few times now and I think what this group has done for Ed is truly inspiring! Since the first time I heard of his story, I've been on the lookout for stones he may have left here but I've had no luck. Over the weekend, I found some hearts around the sculpture that he loved! I also took a moment to sit and watch some children climb on the statue and see their faces light up when they found the stone hearts. It warms my heart that someone has started doing this again! Thank you for the reminder to appreciate the simple joys of life. I've heard you all are close to reaching the fundraising goals and I can't wait for you all to get this bench!!

What a great story & photos.
We happen to have a pretty local member & this weekend was his scouting the bench location expedition. Lee wanted to have a first hand viewing of the location.
Lee Rockoonz indeed left some hearts around in Ed's memory.
We're talking about making it a new tradition - any members visiting the bench need to bring hearts or at least interesting rocks .
How wonderful that you saw it in motion .
I hope you look around & check us out & maybe find some things of interest, and maybe even some rocks
Patty

Welcome to RTH from Virginia! I'm so tickled that you found hearts!!! Thank you for all of your help. Yes, we are close to getting Ed's bench. I can see the parents enjoying the bench as kids play with Wallace and Ladmo. Putting hearts in the LADMO bag is so appropriate.

Hi zooashley , welcome to the fold! We are so HAPPY to see you here! forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/post/1290708/threadWe want your visitors to know what your zoo did to uplift Ed's soul on those hard days. "WE" are all over, and some may never be able to visit, but we appreciate your efforts to make EARTH a better place, as "WE" attempt to make RTH a better place. 1dave

Ashley zooashley, welcome to the Forum from Southern CA. I ended up speaking with you a few weeks ago about the fundraising, but there was no need for a second chef in the kitchen since Patty liveoak had already been working with you. Thanks for all of your assistance in getting this done. Enjoy your stay here!

zooashley we are the culprits. We visited the zoo Saturday shortly after it opened and I set those 2 hearts there. We toured the zoo, didn't see everything due to how muggy it was, but we were both pleased to see the place our friend Ed loved. And we were just in time for the feeding of the vultures too. Such a wonderful group of friendly staff and visitors, we couldn't even get in the gate before we had a couple new friends. We are now members, so if polished rocks appear from time to time it may be us or maybe it will just catch on... Perhaps we'll meet when the time gets near, Ed has family and friends in the valley who may want to be there when his bench is installed. Thank you for joining with us in this. When we circled back around and saw the hearts had found new homes, I added another, did you see it as well? A bench near the location you suggested for Ed's memorial has the inscription below on it, seems he wasn't the only one...

zooashley - I saw you had created a profile a few days ago...and was VERY pleased you posted and shared what you experienced seeing what a few polished rocks can do for people. Thank you SO SO much for your involvement in RTH's efforts to get the bench at the zoo for Ed! Don't be surprised if you catch the "rock bug" just by hanging out with us rock-heads!

Welcome zoo lady zooashley Ashley! Thanks so much for your help on this bench project and it’s so cool that you happened to find Lee’s Rockoonz hearts! I live several states away but I figure life is long and hopefully some day I’ll find myself at the Phoenix zoo and will get to see and enjoy this bench.🤞

Welcome zooashley from up north a bit in the Prescott area! Profound thanks for all your help with this tribute to Ed. It has been uplifting to see this project coming together so quickly -- which reminds me I have a stone to cut for the contest from a very intimidating material.

Excellent Mr.James jamesp Enjoyed can only make some general observation nothing particular to the hunt as mentioned before once resided in Florida It was such a different world from The Sonoran desert world Hard to believe that 2 such diverse Geographic/geological areas Exist on the same continent. Once drove north through Alabama. US 65. On the way to Michigan We were leaving from Ft Eglin, Fl. I took either 29 or 87 out Florida Weaved my way through Alabama to Interstate 65. Brewston, Alabama seems like the route. Whatever back road I was on through Alabama was a trip. How much it different the flora was. At least- that what I recalled. really enjoy it! Sn knott2much to add to the overall discussion. I wasn’t the most geologically observant back then,. Heck I even told the story about owning land in Show Low Az., That land had lots of petrified wood scatted about. Sold that wonderful parcel and never collected any of that wood! Butte that had a happy ending…. Keep on…

Yo James Yep that pet wood was recovered off the Show LowLand My Dad’s major rock hound buddy and co-worker at SRP would spend vacation time up there I just happened to recognize him 5 years later at the AZ Mining Museum Once he discovered I was Remo's son he laughed heartily told him that I never collected any of the pet wood off the land. Not to fear he did! And promptly got some to me. I then made that heart for my neighbor in Show Low – Mike. He grew up in Show Low Him and I were both going through a similar tough situation He helped me get through that- immensely So when I got the wood from my Dad’s Rock’n friend I crafted the heart for Mike I drove up there- after 7 or so years -knocked on Mike's door He recognized me right away & we picked up right where we left off He was doing pretty good I hope to see him again Butte it may not be…. Anyway James thanks for the reply Don’t mean to crash your rock hounding W/ mohs nostalgia buuute I really appreciate it keep on ! Ed

Woot! Woot!!!!!
The funds have been collected, the spot for the bench has been decided, the plaque has been submitted to the engravers. All that's left now is to have the bench installed.
Thanks to ALL RTHLINGS!!!! I know that if you weren't able to donate, which during these hard times is understandable, that your heart was still rooting for us and our efforts to get er done. ALL of us deserve a big group HUG!

Now we need a photo of members sitting on that bench. I still think we should have a meet-up planned for anyone who's going to be around for Tucson 2024. I might be headed out there myself this year so I can do GIA lab classes at the show.
