If the chain coral is dry, it can be hard to see the chain unpolished. However, I would say most of time, you could see the chain unpolished if the rock was dry but it can depend on the color of the matrix. If wet and unpolished, it is generally easy to see the chain. I think most of the ones I have picked up on Lake Michigan have been dry. Probably because people look less in the dry rocks than they do in the wet rocks. I will try to post some additioanl pics of other chain corals later tonight. Clear as mud, right? Lol Chris

Oops, the last Rock 2 should be Rock 3.

Pretty amazing, I would have walk passed the dry rock. If I ever get to Lake Michigan (doubtful), at least I now know to look for them.
Thanks for showing them, Patty

I’ve given mine a closer look and I can see the chain in some places. I never noticed it before, duh.

Thanks for sharing those pics, Chris. Rock 1 is very much like the one I found on Lake Michigan. I did a lot of looking in the dry rocks there, as opposed to Lake Superior, where most of my time was spent in the water, so I think you’re spot on. Rock 2 is super cool, with the chain dark instead of white. I’d be very interested in seeing your polish process! Thanks!
