Still waiting on these cabs…. Tick tock 🤣 Me too!! LOL I've got to figure out the new wheels I just picked up. Both 80 grit...but they're TEARING up material! They're literally chewing up material and spitting it out like no one's business. I ran a Crazy Lace chunk...and a Prairie Agate chunk...but wicked hard...and it didn't "break in" the wheels at all.

A very nice array of the biggies and beauties, sort of like a sampler box of candy. But a great way to learn what you like and what you can do with different types of material. Sharing the diversity of this avocation is part of the game. You get to enjoy a big swatch of lapidary too.

Yeah...that Royal Eye is interesting material. There can (and are on mine) voids within the "jasper" part. I'm going to have to solve a puzzle to cab that one...but I like puzzles. LOL *I don't think realrockhound has a YouTube channel...unless he's hiding something from me! LOL A very nice array of the biggies and beauties, sort of like a sampler box of candy. There's a lot of material in here which I haven't had the opportunity to work...and without him "hooking me up", it would have likely been a long time before I ever did! Thanks Diane! Man...if I only had a nickel for every time I've heard that in my life! LOL

I'm anxious to see what you do with all of these. Way to go naming all of them. May I ask a question, how thin are some of them? For instance, how thin is the Bruneau jasper? I ask because I have some thinly sliced slabs and would prefer them not to go into the junk pile if they are usable. Thanks.

It pays to search the forum first. I got my answers to what the standard thickness or thinness is for a slab in this thread: recommended slab thicknness. I really can't use thin slabs but I'm going to give the old college try. Thanks.

Let’s say you have a slab that’s 1/8” thick, too thin to cab. Cut another piece of backing material that’s 1/8” thick and epoxy to the back of the slab. Now you’ve created a 1/4” thick slab. You can now treat the backing as your girdle line and dome down to that line. Once wrapped or set in a bezel, no one’s going to notice it’s essentially a “doublet”

You might have just helped save a lot of 1/8" slabs. Seriously, I was distraught about what to do with a lot of slabs. I thought of doublets but now it's a confirmed plan. Thank you. Just find a nice neutral backing like a jet black material. It looks a lot nicer than one would think. Just don’t grind past the edge of the backing. It will show and look horrible 😂

I’d post in the RTH market place that you’re looking for it. I think there are a few people here who have a stock of it that might be willing to spare.

The person who cut these must have been trying to make the most of the rock he possibly could and wasn't considering someone wanting thicker pieces, I don't know. Guitar picks. Although they might be a little thick. Currenlty working on some that are between 2 and 3 mm and just put them in polish. Will post pics if they survive.

I ask because I have some thinly sliced slabs and would prefer them not to go into the junk pile if they are usable. Thanks. Not gonna lie...I had to bend realrockhound's ear quite a few times to get the names right! LOL I try to cut my slabs around 3/16". I don't care for 1/4" thick slabs...they seem too thick to me now. So the Bruneau is around that. I know you've gotten answers to several of your questions (doublets) on here as well as you finding the Doublet/Triplet tutorial thread. If you have questions, I've done a few...and know a little...so don't hesitate to PM me...or tag me in a thread. It pays to search the forum first. I got my answers to what the standard thickness or thinness is for a slab in this thread: recommended slab thicknness. I really can't use thin slabs but I'm going to give the old college try. Thanks. See above! LOL I'm anxious to see what you do with all of these. Way to go naming all of them. May I ask a question, how thin are some of them? For instance, how thin is the Bruneau jasper? You might have just helped save a lot of 1/8" slabs. Seriously, I was distraught about what to do with a lot of slabs. I thought of doublets but now it's a confirmed plan. Thank you. The person who cut these must have been trying to make the most of the rock he possibly could and wasn't considering someone wanting thicker pieces, I don't know. Yep...a lot of times people will cut thin slabs to "save" material...or make more slabs to get the most money from the piece of rough. A lot of times people just want slabs as specimen pieces...so it doesn't matter if they're thin or not. It will show and look horrible 😂 It's interesting. The person who did one of the doublet tutorial would in fact grind down past the edge of the top layer...but that was with clear agate. I've tried it and didn't like the results. If it's not a clear agate, I agree it would look funky! Just find a nice neutral backing like a jet black material. It looks a lot nicer than one would think. Just don’t grind past the edge of the backing. It will show and look horrible 😂 Thanks, how difficult is it to find basanite? I'm also heading over to the tutorial section on making doublets. You're the best. I've found some Basanite slabs on eBay once in awhile...but I agree, there might be some people on here willing to let some go. I can't tell what your thin slabs are...but if they're not a material containing a clear agate, then Basanite wouldn't really be needed. You could use ANY material as a backing. I've used "no-name" red Jasper from around here...I've even used Polka-Dot Agate as a backing - but I wanted a white background. If you have a material which doesn't need the "pop" of black that Basanite provides, then you may consider using an inexpensive "neutral" material. In my case, Prairie Agates are cheap...as in free...so I could use those as a backing. You might have just helped save a lot of 1/8" slabs. Seriously, I was distraught about what to do with a lot of slabs. I thought of doublets but now it's a confirmed plan. Thank you. (Pun intended! LOL) Thank you so much! Yeah...that Royal Eye is interesting material. There can (and are on mine) voids within the "jasper" part.
