Beautiful country, thanks for sharing the photos.
Any idea what was mined through the closed up shaft ?

If you mean that cement part below the spring, that is not a closed shaft. If you look carefully on the left side there is a circular mount for a water wheel. There was also old piping up there as well. Not sure if there was any mining up in that part of the canyon though. No roads going up to any mines I can see, and did not see any shafts or tailings piles. May have been for a homestead at some point. maybe for the mine down below and over a bit. Don't know what they mined there. Went to the mine but don't recall seeing anything obvious being mined there. I would have to research it. I know there are copper ores, turquoise and uranium minerals around that area.

Interesting the things you run across in the middle of nowhere. Thanks for explaining. Patty Just checked Mindat and there are no mines up in that canyon, so it was likely for power and water for an old homestead.
The mine I went to is listed as a turquoise mine. Never saw any there, but now I will have to check again when I go back that way.
There is one other mine to the other side of the spring that is listed as a gold mine.
Mines further back in the mountains there gold, silver and tungsten.

Sounds like you should bring your metal detector next time you're out that way.

Thanks for the ride. I bet it's really quiet out there away from everything. Jax is so into it.

Sounds like you should bring your metal detector next time you're out that way. Patty Nevada is one of the largest gold producers in the world, but the majority of the gold in Nevada is microscopic in the rock. Only nugget form is here in Southern Nevada. Use to be able to find them in the washes in East Las Vegas, but that is all been built over with houses and roads. Other location is down around Eldorado Canyon South of Las Vegas. That is mostly claimed, private or part of the Lake Mead Recreational Area. Can't have a metal detector anywhere within the Lake Mead Recreational Area. It is a $10,000 fine. That includes the part of Gold Basin, where people look for gold and meteorites, that extends in to the Lake Mead area.
Unless you are doing a major operation, it is not worth going after the gold here. Same with diamonds if someone finds the location again near Las Vegas where they were found back in the 1800s.
Personally, I prefer to dig for the turquoise, which yo can make a lot more money on in a day's dig than for gold or diamonds.

Thanks for the ride. I bet it's really quiet out there away from everything. Jax is so into it. It was fairly quiet further up in the canyon. Can still hear the highway somewhat and planes.
The quietest place I have found to find rocks is about 50 miles North of Las Vegas in the Spring Mountain Range. Far enough away from the highway that you cannot hear any vehicles, and the area is restricted air space so no private or commercial aircraft allowed in the area. It is dead silent out there except when the very occasional military helicopter flies over.
Yes, Jax absolutely loves getting out and exploring. I have to really watch her around mines though as she goes on them without hesitation. I don;t mind if I am familiar with the mine and know it is safe, but she has snuck off in to mines I have not checked out before, including one that did not look that stable. I had to go in after her and she was eating some dead thing she found at the bottom of the mine. She has also gotten too close for my comfort to the edges of some vertical shafts. I worry the edge may be unstable. Also have to be careful about snakes in the mines. Only ran across one live one inside a mine, and it scared the crap out of both of us when that thing started hissing in the back of this dark mine shaft. Sounded like someone suddenly opened an air tank, and was loud and continuous. Did not see the snake right away. Luckily it was just a large Great Basin gopher snake, so not a venomous one. Still made Jax wait at the entrance while I gathered my stones, not only because of the snake, but also because there was a deep vertical shaft right by where we were. Got some really beautiful azurite, malachite and turquoise out of there though, so the long hike and adventure was worth it.

I live next to an interstate. My brother and sister in law live in the quasi country. I find it very hard to sleep there. Too quiet. I can't imagine the dead silence out there where there aren't even planes. It would unnerve me.
Yeah, keep a good eye on her. She's so dear. Does she get all excited when it's time to get in the car?

It is funny because when I first got her and we would go the desert she did not wan to go home. She would run around chasing anything that ran fast, and would wander off and explore. She would come back after a little while and check on me then go explore some more until she tired out, then she would come lay down by me and take a nap. Like here, where she is snuggling up to my leg to take a nap while I dig.
Here Jax came back to check on me after out playing and exploring and fell asleep watching me dig. This is my second favorite photo of her.
She loved it so much out in the desert that when it came time to go home, she would literally hide behind rocks and bushes to try and avoid getting back in the truck because she wanted to stay. Did not matter if it was getting dark, raining or whatever. I would have to go get her and carry her back to the truck.
Now she understands that we are going back out. so when is tired and we are about to go, she will stare at the truck door to let me know she wants in her bed.
She has jumped out of the truck though and gone back in to the tent though a couple of times when I was trying to pack it up because she loves camping.

I had to take a drive up into the Hills the other day. I stopped the car and got out...in the middle of nowhere...and listened to the silence. Literally nothing...no "white noise" which we don't pay attention to normally...just precious silence. It was amazing! vegasjames - I seriously never get tired of your trip pictures! That picture of Jax sleeping with her chin on the rocks is one of my favorite pics I've seen in a long time! LOVE IT!!
