Well I think those look spectacular!
The lighting looks even and the reflections show the polish well. I think if there was a diffuser covering the LED's that would be good. Seeing the individual LED's can be distracting, but it seems most lighting solutions sold these days have that issue?

Those pictures look great! I think # 1 and 3 are the best. # 2 is a little too warm/red. While I'd normally not prefer a blue background, for some reason it looks to me like it turned out the best. One thing I've noticed is different colored backgrounds can really help different rocks show best. (Especially for me using just an iphone to take pics). If I can't get a great shot with one background, like for some reason the coloring of the camera is off (say too warm), then changing the background color can completely change the outcome of the pic, even though I am focused on the rock. Gotta be some sort of science behind that but I don't know what it is. I'd just suggest having a handful of different backgrounds, light, medium, dark shades. Your single shots I really like the last pic, looks great!

They look great!
#4 looks blurry. Not sure if it is due to Cloudinary compressing your photos or the original photo itself is out of focus. I always upload images to flickr and link them to RTH, so that I could get the highest resolution.

They look great to me! I am still struggling with lighting and trying different things.

Looking at it again, I think my final fave is # 3. I like that the background is more neutral and doesn’t pop more than the stones. 👍

Thank you everyone! I will take your comments and suggestions as well as any more that I hope continue to come in. I’ll be posting more of my efforts as well. I want to really understand how the light box can help with taking pictures. Practice makes perfect, or at least it makes better. We also have a computer electronic microscope that I will be setting up soon. I believe it takes macro photos, which I’m super excited about.

jasoninsd#4 is one of the smaller, beautiful prairie agates. I love how they tumble!

Seeing the individual LED's can be distracting, but it seems most lighting solutions sold these days have that issue? It has a diffuser, but using it also covers the hols I use to take photos. It also seems a bit thin, and I can still detect the LEDs through it. I’ll make new ones, or rather have my wife or kid to help me make them. Both can sew very well (my wife is a good bit better than her daughter, of course but the kid is pretty good. Better than me lol) which is a handy skill to have.

I can't wait to see macro photos of your beautiful rocks!!! And think of the science!!! A microscopic evaluation of the surface of those rocks that were tumbled with 60 grit AO (as it compares to an equivalent grit of SC) would be flippin' AWESOME!!

I forget what this one is… maybe a Bahia agate or rainbow agate. I’ve gotten too many things mixed up lately though to really know. I love how it turned out.

This can be tricky with shiny rocks. A diffuser effectively makes your light source larger and can increase glare. This can cause the light reflections to take up more space on the rock, blocking more of the rock's features and making it harder to see both the features and the shine. Getting good photos of shiny rocks can be a challenge.

that’s what I’m finding. It’s interesting, but I’ll figure out how to get it to at least work decently.
