So I have had difficulty with backlit photos. I use my phone camera and there is a vertical dark line, or a shadowy band really, that moves across the screen left to right. I usually just wait for the lighter area to be centered on the cab to take the pic as these bands continuously move across the screen, light, dark, light, dark. This happens in front of a light bulb and even on a light box where there is a full opaque screen covering the light source. I don’t know what the cause is. Maybe someone does. In the meantime I just try to center my photo in between the dark bands.

Are there any other electrical devices in the room that you can turn off? Or perhaps photograph in a different room? Maybe try a different light source? Outside of that, you could drive all the way up here and use the cheap little light box that I used.

opalpyrexia Hmm, that’s interesting. Thanks Gary! Well knowing that maybe I can reduce it some. Maybe even taking the light box outside with an extension cord to get away from appliances. 🤔

Incandescent lights may be better, I think the ballasts and transformers cause most of the noise. I have an idea, if weather permits AND I actually cut a cab this time...

I didn't expect to be first, but here goes... This cab is Star Quartz/Carnelian. From Mindat.org: "Refers to the shape of an aggregate of radiating crystals; not to be confused with the optical property "asterism". Star quartz usually grows at low temperature, often around a core of chalcedony." It's cool stuff, but it can be a heart-breaker due to occasional empty cavities where no crystals formed, and because the crystals are simply interlocked and not bonded to each other.
I didn't take a photo of the slab. I'll post one if someone really wants to see it.
I find this in geodes that i find here in Illinois

Well… my new blades showed up. Saw oil looks like it’s thawing (horse laxative). Gonna be scrambling this weekend to get cut what I want. 🤞

Called that. I knew someone was going to do a Montana, just didn’t know who. Nice one victor1941Now that the weather is cooperating. I have basically sat and Sunday to get mine done. Half of my stuff has been under a foot of snow. Saw oil frozen etc..😅

Realrockhound, take a look at the wood in my last tumble post and see if you like it better.

Realrockhound, take a look at the wood in my last tumble post and see if you like it better. Pretty nice. I think I like the cab you did for the contest best. Good material to use for a backlit theme.

My wife saw it right away and yes it does look like a dalmation with the head on the right side and the tail pointing up. Nice find MsAli!

You can kick yourself later for putting this into my hands brother! LOL Agate Showing Iris!! Slabs: Finished Iris Agate Cabochon: Dome view...wicked low dome!! 673 pictures to get this one!! Zoomed in: Messed around with the editing (just for show):
