Looks like you have figured out how to tumble obsidian and make it look great. I keep hearing people say how difficult it can be.

Very pretty. About how much size did you lose throughout the tumble?

hplcman - Those turned out great! I got a bunch of rough from them quite awhile back. I did a ton of pre-tumbling shaping on all the pieces before I ran them. I wanted to save time on the rough grind...so I just needed to finish them up in the vibe. I really love the looks of these...and YES, the Velvet can be a pain to take pictures capturing the sheen...

Looks like you have figured out how to tumble obsidian and make it look great. I keep hearing people say how difficult it can be. It's a finicky tumble, that's for sure!! My whole process is to treat it as gently as I can. I start them off in 120/220 grit with lots of cushioning. It's not efficient, as the cushioning material eats up a lot of the grit, but it slows the process down and not only protects these from chipping and bruising as they tumble, but makes it easier to control. I'll also polish for 14 days minimum in AO, checking on the progress periodically as they tumble. Sometimes I add more AO at day 7 of the polish, just a couple tablespoons, especially if the slurry is looking a little thin. I would like to try cerium oxide polish sometime, I hear that's a great polish with obsidian, but it's pretty expensive and I'm not ready to pull the trigger on that yet.

Chefs kiss to all of those. Very very fine material! Thanks!! I am pretty happy with the shine, but (in spite of how careful I think I was) there are still some small chips on the surface of these. I still have a lot to learn with obsidian!

Very pretty. About how much size did you lose throughout the tumble? Thank you!! I start the grinding off with 120/220 SiC.... I didn't weigh them, but I estimate that I loose about 20 - 30% or so?

Stellar results! Top notch job! Thanks Dillon! I was stoked to see that snowflake obsidian you sent! I can't wait to tumble it and see if I can reproduce this shine on that! I'll post pictures when I get to it!

You have a beautiful shine on those! Good job! Thanks! I love the result! Each time I tumble these I learn a little more through my mistakes... Someday I'm hoping for the perfect piece!

Thanks! I still have about 8 pieces of velvet obsidian from them to tumble. I'm hoping I can do a better job on those! I love the rainbow sheen these have in real life! I'll see if I can get better pictures of it in the future!

If it's any help, videos often seem to make up for my incompetence in photography.
