I have a KN cabber, so my end flat disc is inside my unit, but still, having my cabber in my studio (spare bedroom) I greatly try to limit how much mess it all makes.
I found that these "crayons" of Battstik work really well and don't really make a mess (well, the green chrome oxide one can't help itself). Basically like I said it's a crayon, I mist my wheel with a spray bottle, then turn on the machine, and rub the crayon on the wheel & you're good to go, no slurry to mix. Then I use the spray bottle as needed. As others have pointed out, polishing is supposed to happen as it starts to dry (and starts catching on the wheel in my experience). The other thing I do to avoid the mess is using pieces of plexiglass to contain the water.
With your wheel outside your cabinet, you need to make some kind of extension to do that.
Shouldn't be too bad to come up with something that works.

Using Battsticks is a great idea Patty! I'd forgotten Gearloose makes them in oxides as well as diamond. I'd give it a try except I have enough bulk polishing powders to leave them in my will to the local rock club, as Gearloose jokes on his site. Less is more when polishing, I've learned. |

One of the nice things about the Genie is the spin on right arbor so a lot of wheel grits can be available with minimal effort. Highland Park has soft wheels in many grits including 14,000 and 50,000. The eight inch are $100 and there will likely be a BF deal at 10% off. They don't charge tax and the shipping is free.
I have 8,000,14,000 and 50,000 mounted and 100k diamond paste on a canvas pad. I also have zam on another.

You bring up an interesting question that I've been trying to find an answer to also. "What is the grit equivalent of tin /cerium oxide?" I also bought a right hand adapter spindle for my genie and got the 8,000;14,000;50,000 nova wheels. It really seems to me that tin oxide has a grit equivalent less than 50,000 so id be going backwards if moving from 50,000 to tin/cerium. I also have raybriteA which is i believe ~60,000 and rapid polish #61 from mls which i was told is .25 micron or ~75,000 grit. While the rapid polish #61 works great as a finish in my vibe it is kinda overkill on most cabs. In fact, there isn't much of a noticeable difference between a well polished 3,000 and the 50,000. If anyone has the approximate grit values of tin and cerium or even super cerium I would live to know. As it stands I'm with iamchris in that most of the time tin /cerium leave deposits of compound vs the high gloss i can get with 50,000 grit! |

I just got my resinwheels last week. Nova 8k, 14k, 50k, and I also opted for a cerium resin wheel too. It's been a rough week with work and I've been too busy to use it, but will report back with results once they're broken in and I can finally finish the ones I've left on the dop in anticipation for this moment.
Ordered from Johnson Brothers and it took them nearly a week to ship it, but they were indeed the lowest price.

So Chris, where are you going to put those wheels? (Cause you got wheels, not end disks right?) Do you have a 2nd arbor or will you remove your other wheels on your HP8, and just switch them off and on? Look forward to hearing how you like them. I have contemplated a similar upgrade, except I think(?) I remember seeing them available in disks which would be easier for me to switch out if they fit a KN8.
Also, can you reduce your wheel spacers just slightly so that your polishing disk fits inside the unit shield? You can buy different thicknesses of spacers (for the KN8) so should be possible too for the HP8. You’d lose a tiny bit of hand room but doesn’t look like it’d be too much.

I didn't like the nova wheel. It never seemed to cut, but that could just be my impression and not fact. I use a squirt bottle to keep the wheels wet.
eta, I think you'll really like the 8k. It's a good transitional wheel to the higher ones. I always thought 3k to 14k was a bit of a leap.

rockjunquie Do you have the larger discs? I’ve been wondering if the 4” would be sufficient since it’s more economical; could get 3 for less than the price of 2 large ones. Or, if it’d just feel too crowded to work on being so much smaller and I might wish I just forked over the extra cash.

My 5 inch doesn't. |

@rockhunquie Ya, they say 5 1/2, so it’s already reduced from matching our 6” wheels. I’ve even cut out a piece of paper to 4” to mimic working on the smaller option.🤓 It does look quite small but since it’s a disc with no center bolt maybe it’d be fine…

Compare the Pixie and the Genie.
ETA I believe Pat uses the Pixie. Maybe she'll know if it seems crowded. |

I have a Pixie and a Genie. I normally use the Genie, but good to have a backup. I don’t dop unless the cab is very small; I use fingers. Much easier. Pixie would be fine for the very small.
