I'm checking here on RTH for the first time to see if anyone is interested in owning one of my flint knapped,
hand crafted knives. I've been flint knapping for about 20 years now and have done demonstrations at some
state parks/historic sites and events here in South Carolina, North Carolina and Georgia. Several times I have
been invited to Native American events to demonstrate my talent. My interests in artifact collecting and rock
hounding led me to try and make stone tools. I never really tried to sell any arrowheads or knife blades but
was talked into it while I was doing demonstrations. I did sell a few knife blades to folks who would make
their own knives using one of them. Several years ago I decided to put my own knives together with natural
wood handles primarily from Southern Live Oak found here along the South Carolina Coast. I'll walk under
these large majestic trees in the marsh at low tide looking for dead, barkless, wind and insect damaged branches.
After I find a suitable handle that will match up with a blade, I will cut, shape then hand sand it using 80 grit paper
all the way to 2,000 grit. I use a two part epoxy mixed with cedar/oak sawdust to haft the blade to the handle.
The handle then gets a coat of clear Minwax stain to seal the wood and liven it a little. When dry, it is then rubbed
by hand with a piece of cloth and wrapped with artificial sinew. All this takes time as I am using hand tools but
I can produce a finished knife in about a day and a half. Most of my knives are made outdoors while we are on
camping trips and many are sold there while they are being made. Others are being bought by a friend and sold at
his local rock shop. Another friend and dealer who does shows throughout the Southeast has started buying
some. I mark them all on the bottom butt end of the handle with an "R".
List of states that I know my knives have gone to:
North Carolina
South Carolina
Georgia
Tennessee
Ohio
Virginia
North Dakota
South Dakota
Texas
Utah
Oregon
