Here’s the deal. Guiding a guy out to Hampton buttes tomorrow. Plan to do a full trip report in the process. With that, if I find anything worth a crap, winner of this months cab contest gets it. Since I’m in the contest, caveat is that if I win, runner up gets it. Send me your energy ya lil rock rascals!!!!

Good luck on your adventure.
I've been there a few times starting around 37 years ago. I had good luck surface hunting. A couple of years ago a rockhound on the beach told me that the diggings at Hampton were decimated. UGH !

A couple of years ago a rockhound on the beach told me that the diggings at Hampton were decimated. UGH ! Thats pretty much it. Stuff can still be found that’s decent. However tons of digging is required. I got some other spots I’m crossing my fingers no one else has discovered yet. See if I can turn anything up

Tuesday, September 2nd 2024. 90 Degrees Fahrenheit. Hampton (Bomb holes) Butte, Oregon. Making the trip of Highway 20 east of Prineville. Basically nothing out here. Such a scenic trip. Old Brothers diner. Now I think hills have eyes people live in it. If you want to go to this crap site, here's the first turn you take on this road off Highway 20. The local rednecks added their art to the sign. Then you travel down this dirt road into no mans land for about 10.5 miles to get to this waste of time site. So pretty haha Then eventually you get to this road and hang a right. Rednecks haven't gotten to this sign yet. There was a fire just over the other side of the hill making its way towards us. Thats pretty neat. Here's some cows. Some people like them. Then you drive for 2-3 more miles and once you see the beaches of Normandy, you Know you've arrived. I went to a spot that didn't have holes. Then basically you just start wasting your time digging holes until you find some crappy green wood in the ground. Then after about 2 hours of digging, you're left with this crap, that best suited for tumbling Then you wash it up and realize the work wasn't worth it. But there are always those that will find one mans junk as their treasure lol. These are the bigger pieces. All in all, about what I expected. But took my friend out so he could see the hype aint real. 1 out of 10, do not recommend.

I think a pickaxe would have worked better than that little shovel. Cows look neat. No snakes?

I think a pickaxe would have worked better than that little shovel. Cows look neat. No snakes? Pick axe was main tool. Lil shovel was to remove dirt. Zero snakes. What I found is pretty typical of what’s left out there. For me, that stuff isnt worth the hassle of the digging. I’m sure there are a few more nice pieces of stuff left out there. However it’s all by pick a spot and luck. Stuffs good for tumbling, however… I’m not a tumbler and looking for bigger solid pieces

I think you should see if any of those are cabable materials for this months contest.

I bought a pick mattock this year, best purchase ever! 100% the best tool to chop up the ground and pry things out. The adze head is great to chop as well as drag material out of the way without switching to a shovel. Don’t know how I ever lived without one! Then again, I feel the same about the pitchfork I bought last year..

realrockhound , Thanks for the trip report. The last time I drove through Hampton was about 20 years ago. There was snow on the ground and I didn't find much. The cool thing was jumping a pair of Bull Elk that were hiding in the Juniper. My favorite wood to find there is the red and green combo. Here's a few pics that this Junior Rockhound found 35 years ago while surface hunting. A nice hefty 8 pounder. I think this piece is Palm. Would have liked to find the whole log.

However… you’re going to have to be incredibly lucky to find something like that now.

I'm a little lost here. I have something labeled Hampton Butte but it's an agate?
