cabby that makes sense and I agree it is always the best when you can aquure material that has its source labeled appropriately! Also, that 2nd picture is an amazing rock. Almost looks like a combination of oolites and sphereulites but I'm thinking the orbs are the latter (sphereulites) And no,no one is bullying me. I have fairly thick skin. I just got a box of agates from South Texas (Alpine area). The moss and plumes in them are stunning and makes me wonder if they are still part of the chihuahua agate range? I've only cut some of the smaller ones but I am not disappointed at all!

Well, looking at the pics I just uploaded I guess those don't look like laguna at all. There are a few larger rough pieces that are pretty similar to some of the agua nueva moss agates I have though. When I get around to cutting more of them I'll make a new post to showcase them!

lapidary1234 both pics are the same rock, just zoomed in on the center orbs. That chunk of Luna is pretty big so it’s hard to see the details with the full pic! Definitely one of my favorite pieces in the “collection” and am dreading the day I toss it in the saw.

Well thought I'd update! The presentation went really well. As far as an expanded show and tell, a handful of other members brought in samples of agates and imperial jaspers. One new member even brought in an entire flat of stuff from the ojuela mine including what I believe to be a super nice specimen of Austinite with fabulous green Drury! I showed some pictures of examples of many of the 117 minerals found at the ojuela mine, a short projector segment with maps of topography and mineral deposits in the various Mexican states and even showed a short video clip of the giant selenite caves in the Naica mine. All in all it was a success. The wifi projector I got 2nd hand on ebay for $25 worked incredibly well too. I could use my phone and screen mirror it on the big screen Things are looking good for our little central Wisconsin mineral club

That sounds awesome! And didn’t know that you are in Wisconsin as well! I don’t have much experience with central WI though. Spent around 20 yrs in madison and now up near superior. Despite how rural I live now I tend to think of central WI as the boonies, so it’s cool that you have a local rock club! My nearest one is about an hour away lol

cabby Didn't realize you live in wisconsin as well. I live right outside of wausau so its the biggest metro area in central WI but o can still drive 10-15 minutes in any direction and be out in the country/woods. I didn't much like it when I moved here from Milwaukee at age 8 but it has grown on me and I now appreciate the smaller town loving. Speaking of superior, the last cabbing machine I got i drove to superior for. Star diamond gp8, $340 and the guy threw in a lake superior agate the size of a tennis ball. Ill post a pic of it. Anyways, I really needed that machine so I'm glad you didn't snag it (wink wink) . I think there's a few folks from WI on this forum. I know hefty was (don't know if he left the forum or changed his username). Also I believe fernwood is from near rice lake if memory serves. We should do a local meet up sometime! The wisconsin moonstone operation recently got shut down and needs different permits. I attended the town hall zoning and planning commission meeting and it sounds like they will be getting their special exception permit likely on sep 23rd!

Here is the lake superior agate the guy threw in when I bought the machine. I say threw in but technically I traded him a few wisconsin moonstones. Either way, im happy as it is huge. I believe He said he found it where the knife river meets the big lake. Said they put a dam in and turned a bunch of ground over revealing a bunch of rocks. I didn't have time to stop but if you're in the area might be worth checking out. There is a member of my club who invited me to go agate hunting on the chippewa River near eau claire. I guess people find some good agates there as well. I'm personally still looking for any spot to reliably find more than one or two mini agates along the big lake. I've heard rivers and streams are good spots, particularly a river with enough current to keep the algae from growing but also not too deep so you can wear waders in and hunt that way. A bucket with a plexiglass bottom is supposed to be a good tool to have as well. Unless... if you have any good agate spots, im all ears

lapidary1234 I just moved here last year so don’t really know the area yet. Someday I want to get out and hound… but I don’t drive so it would be a heck of a lot of walking all over the place! It’s about 2mi each way, up and down steep hills, to the grocery store. I walk past some potentially good areas but need to save my energy for carrying groceries home 😆 I know where rice lake is! That’s the “big city” around here lol. Didn’t know that there was anyone else near this area! Although I make fun of how rural this area is sometimes, it’s more or less what I wanted. Restaurants are generally terrible and the north woods tourism thing is a head scratcher, but it’s beautiful and peaceful! We were planning to move back to the twin cities but chose rural acreage in the end, and don’t regret it! Have had enough of city living (although Madison hardly qualified for me after growing up in twin cities).
