My son just left for a job in ND. We come from the land of no rocks. He's a rock lover like myself. Here is what he wrote to me- his first impression. It has to be very odd to see so many rocks!!
He says the people are really nice.
He'll be spending some free time looking for good rocks.
He's in Dickinson. A fairly small place east of Bismark.
Does anyone hound in the area?

Tell him to go to the museum. He is also just a short drive from Glendive which is the closest place on the Yellowstone River to him. Lots of great rocks there.

I knew you were serious because that's the kind of stand up, generous guy that you are.

I always love seeing thing like his message! I have only ever lived in the upper Midwest so it is fascinating when people think my “normal” is strange. Both my house and the old stable foundation out back are fieldstones (removed when it was a farm) with concrete poured over them. There’s also a pile of fieldstones next to the stable foundation that never got used, so they just left them there. There’s 3 different moraines within a few miles from my house so fieldstones and glacial erratics (boulders) are the norm around here.
The idea that you DON’T have a billion fieldstones piled everywhere and you have some clue what kind of rocks you will find is far more bizarre, to me! It’s like when people experience Junebugs for the first time… I can’t imagine life without them!

Unless you count the tiny rocks of sand at the beach.

rockjunquie Haha! That is REALLY hard to wrap my mind around! Digging a 3x6 garden bed 18” deep nets me at LEAST 100# of rocks 4-18” diameter. I have more rocks than dirt 😆

Living on the Chesapeake Bay in Southern Maryland, there is sand and rocks so small that they may as well be sand. If I dig in my yard i get tons of tree roots and sand. If I want to go rockhounding, it is at least an hours drive in any direction 😢. Good thing I have the internet to get rocks, but not so good on my wallet 😂.

Yeah, I think I mentioned that my sister is on the Eastern Shore of Virginia near the water. Not really any rocks there, either.
There was a member here that was from Virginia Beach. He used to get rocks from a hardware store. LOL! Better than we can get on our own. He got some nice red jasper.

That is… wow lol. Around here a ton of gravel or river rocks is normally the same price or cheaper than dirt! I don’t say “dirt cheap” anymore 😆. And of course the gravel will have things like hematite jasper, lakers, aventurine, etc mixed in. My driveway gets hounded frequently! Heavily glaciated areas are great for hounding if you are aiming for just interesting rocks, but definitely not good if you want something specific! Probably good for tumblers?

Don’t worry, plenty of leaverite too! Dug up two rocks today… one was just a crappy hematite and the other that I thought was unakite ended up being a generic granitoid with a tiny bit of green veins. We have rocks, but finding GOOD rocks… mostly just backbreaking labor to move garbage rocks out of my way 🤣

We have lovely amazonite, too. The best, IMHO. But, I believe the mines are closed.

Yup, the Amazonite is from Morefield Mine in Amelia. They closed the mine a few years back. From what I hear, they are looking to sell the property, but haven't found a buyer yet. Who knows if it will ever be open again 😢. I do have some of the Amazonite from there that I bought at my clubs auction in August, and I'm hoping to pick up some more at our show on Oct. 5th. But I don't know what to do with it. All I do is tumble at the moment and it seems to be a waste to tumble it. Maybe I'll pick some big pieces up and sell them 😂.

I can't find any. The ones I've had were gorgeous.
