It's amazing what a little polishin' can do for a rock!
That second cab is sweet lookin' stuff. The rough looks like a piece of teal tiger eye, and the cab is kinda like imperial jasper.

I still have mercury amalgam in at least 4 of my teeth, I know mercury is supposed to be deadly toxic- blah blah blah, but I still contend that its ingestion and long term build-up and that pose the greatest health hazards. A little cinnabar here and there probably isn't going to hurt anyone, especially if its not being heated, and while it is sometimes found in this material it isn't usually in large amounts.
That green tiger-eye like material sure cut nicely though, I had no idea that stuff would shine up so well!
And as for that road, I looked at it for a rally road years ago, but despite being a designated BLM OHV area, there are way too many "car breaker" ruts and potholes, not to mention the asbestos dust (which I think is as much or more hazardous than the residual mercury in the area).

What exactly is plasma agate anyway? Until just recently, I'd never heard of it before. You guys get the coolest green rocks out there on the west coast, really nice stuff.

Ed, nice haul and great cabs! I read something about plasma agate awhile back, and they said the mercury is in the red parts (cinnibar). Doesn't look like you have red in your samples, at least not in the stuff you cabbed. Even if you did have cinnibar, I think it would only pose a problem if you inhaled the dust when grinding. -Don

I'm not worried about the mercury, like Pete says, there's not that much and I do grind with water so there's no dust. The area is loaded with asbestos and that's more of a hazard just being out there breathing in the dust. The teal tiger eye looking piece is really cool. It's chatoyant just like tiger eye but it is some form of serpentine. I only found a small piece, I wish I would have gotten more of it. We found some other very interesting pieces out there too. The first thing Pete did when we got there was locate a large rock he left there last week and proceeded to whack it with his large hammer. It looked really interesting inside. Hey Pete, where's the cabs?

This should end, once and for all, the debate on rock licking.
