I just checked on my batch of stones from the rock box and it's doing well with what made it to polish the first time around. The pendant is in this batch and so far it has held up with no visible blemishes. Just a few more days in polish and it should be ready (with pics of course). Now I just have to decide wether to drill through the face for a jump ring or use a leaf bail instead...

Beautiful cab, I like how you found that symmetric patern. Looks so much like an egg!

Yes I was actually going more for the egg look than a tear drop when I was cutting it. It just made sense when I was considering how a leaf bail would look on it. That's thinking ahead ya-know. I had another peek in the barrel today and couldn't find the damn thing after diggin around for a few minutes but I checked some of the other pieces in there and most of the stuff that isn't agate still needs at least a few more days to shine up to the point where I'll be happy with them. I also have this neato "re-cut" quartz point in there that I started grinding the base of ages ago with a mini carbide wheel on my Dremel. I never got around to making a necklace out of it but since i've been playing with that mini diamond wheel I've been scrounging around for any little practice projects I can find. I thought that re-faceting a natural quartz point would be a pretty straight forward operation but it actually required a good deal of dexterity to accomplish while keeping the facet angles and proportions true to the original form. It's in there tumbling away with the rest of the neato stuff I had lying around to throw in with the rock box goodies in final polish right now. I had always planned to turn that crystal point into a LED necklace ever since I got it about 2 and a half years ago but never got around to it. Well, now I have access to some cheap black light LED's and I've decided to make a serious attempt to do it. If anyone is unfamilliar with the behavior of shortwave light at a distance, it often causes a deep voilet "aura" to eminate from around the source of the light which is the result of short wave light tending to scatter and not focus the same as "normal" light. The effect with a crystal is almost mystical when you see it. (unfortunately, the effect does not photograph very well either) If the crystal survives the polish cycle free of blemishes then I will have to figure out how to mount the point in a base that is just big enough to accomodate & conceal the hardware while being durable enough and still practical and "nice" looking. I already have a set of leads with batteries that will work as a prototype but the button cell stack is a bit too extrusive IMO and I don't think any self respecting person would want to wear it after realizing there will be a blatent stack of batteries. Oh-well, I guess that's a project for another thread after I take some pics....

Well, after some considerable delay due to a move/break-up, I did finally dig this thing back up and finish it. I actually threw it in the final polish with my latest "candy" batch because I was never entirely satisfied with the shine. So, for those of you who weren't here or didn't follow along before, read the first two pages of this thread. ;D Now for the rest of you, here is how it happened from start to finish... Before: After: One again, sorry if the photo looks off. As soon as I can figure out where I packed my light box when I moved I can take some better ones but it looks almost exactly the same as the first time. (except even better & shinier) Sorry it took me so long to finish it. Rob

It turned out fantastic! I am glad you went with the leaf bail. I, myself am not that fond of drilled pendants. The fact that you did that with a dremel and a tumbler is an inspiration to us all.

Wow Rob - that's beautiful! Very nice job on that - as an added bonus - I learned a lot from your posts! Glad to see you finished it - I'm sure there's some significance in there somewhere given the changes in your life... Thanks for posting the final picture!

Last update on this one, seriously this time. There's only one thing left to post anyway... This one's a full wrap around, 88 frames in total. I do wish PB didn't eat the quality so much when it uploads a vid though, I could stare at the original 640 x 480 hi-res WMV version of this looping around and around for at least ten minutes without getting bored of it! ;D
