Hi! You are lucky to live in Minnesota and like rock finding, we have a rich mixture of rocks to tumble polish. Lake Superior Agates can be found nearly anywhere in the state south of Lake Superior. I have found many hundreds of pounds! We also find maryellen jasper, a beautiful stone red with shiney iron ore mixed in. You can find agatetized wood, amethyst and many odd color stones. I have even found nice green chrysophrase agate. Keep your eyes open for large agates which can be pretty valuable. The Moose Lake Agate Days event will be held July 17 & 18 at the high school. You will find many agate collectors set up out back in the parking lot ... and so many beautiful agates you will be surprised! On Saturday they have "The Agate Stampede" 350 pounds of agates and $300 in quarters is mixed in a truck load of gravel then spread down Elm Street. You get to scramble for all you can find. The gem and mineral show is free and alway a blast! I hope you find some nice stones to polish, be careful .... rock hunting can be addicting ;o) ...digz

Quartz and granite is all I can find in N GA as well. But thats all thats here as far as I can find. I'm gonna start buying what I want. The best I've found (and was pleased to find it in the Chattahooche river) was tiger eye. Not good quality, but it shoud be interesting.

I'm from MN also! I love going up to the North Shore to find rocks right on Lake Superior. It's prohibited to take rocks from all the State Parks along there, but there are plenty of public lake access areas. Go a day or two after a good storm. What part of Mn are you from? I live in the Twin Cities and know a couple good places around here. Stephanie--sweetiehound

Hi All, I'm from Minnesota too, up on "Da Range". My daughter and I do some agate hunting and have found a few nice ones. I'm hoping to get a tumbler soon but have lots to learn. I visit the cities a few times each summer, would love to learn of a few places where it's ok to go agate hunting. Cher - RosebudMN

Im a Minnesotan also. My son and I like to look for agates too. I found two larger ones on my drive way yesterday. Gravel pits are a good spot to look.

you guys get some nasty winters,

Yeah, and it's just around the corner. I remember one year when it was so cold you could toss boiling water out the door and it sounded like a firecracker as it instantly froze. Not looking forward to -40° below. (We had -55° that night.)

Oh Sweetiehound! I just found out I'll be in Minn/St. Paul in a few weeks. My hubby (Rob) has to go there for 2 weeks of training and wanted me there to visit him for the weekend. (we never get to see one another...he was transferred to Chicago 2 yrs ago in December.)
Not sure where we'll be staying (probably near the airport...he works for Northwest Airlines), but Rob approved us going to look for some agate over the weekend. Any specific spots you'd suggest? I don't want to get arrested! I searched on the web for about 2 hrs and thought I read that anywhere along the Mississipi River would be good....
*begs humbly for specific suggestions* Driveway gravel would be fine too...if it contains agates. (Will try and get some for Cookie too...since we're both in Georgia and up to our chins in quartz here.)
Thanks! Emerald aka: Helen Nicholson

I wish Sweetiehound would come back and look this post over. I keep checking it too Helen, in hopes of finding the same info. I'll be down there sometime between the 13th and 25th to help out my son a little. Have to check with you and see if it's during the same time. Maybe we can get together for coffee while your hubby is in training.

Cher, I think I'll be there Friday thru Tuesday (17th thru 21st)
Most likely, would be able to meet up on Monday if you're available. Will also pack you a bag of crystal/amethyst and icky quartz all for your tumbling pleasure! *chuckles*
Cookie doesn't know this yet...but I'm already packing her a bag of goodies. We're going to meet up sometime in Helen to rockhound together! What fun that will be!

Hi Helen, That's really nice of you, thank you. Sure hope everything works out for me to get there. I'm laid up with back problems right now but still have over a week to heal. I'll be in touch via the instant messages or email.

Sorry I've been out of touch, but I went on vacation to Yellowstone - Awesome place!! I'm not familiar with hunting in the Bloominton/Mall of America/airport area. I've found some good spots along the St. Croix area. Rosebud- I just emailed some more specific areas to you. Cute name by the way. How far did you want to drive? Depending on rush hour, it will take you about 45 minutes to get to the river from the airport. When are you coming up again? Maybe we should meet.

Afton State Park along the St. Croix river is always were I go. Technically, collecting rocks is prohibited, but the rangers really don't mind if you don't go crazy.

Rob found a flight for us to take on Sunday morning at around 6am! So...will probably stay till Wednesday....
I printed a map to Afton State Park and will more than likely go out there and discreetly hunt for some goodies!
Thanks for the suggestion Sweetiehound! I won't go hog wild!

Is there any from the Minneapolis area that can clue me in on where to find supplies, ie tumblers/grit/bulk stone/etc etc
I've been to Hud hobby, but not a whole lot to see there.
