Stagnite I'm not sure of... but Sagenite is the ropy or needle like crystal strustures you sometimes see on agate. I think its like the rutile needles in quartze too. There is a guy on ebay right now selling old agate from Oregon beaches with sagenite. I don't know that I have ever had the luck of finding one from the beaches we have gone to, but haven't double checked either.
Its interesting that they are saying to look for carnelian in summer... on the coast the agate is seen best in winter, as the storms pull the sand off the gravel beds. I kind of assumed that similarly the storms would be washing more material into the rivers this time of year, so if you can get at them you would see more now.

OK That's what I ment Sagenite, that's who it was with the pictures of what the outside of my agates look like. Really Cool! Does that happen in river agates as well as ocean agates? From what I have been reading the agates are found in the gravel beds of some Lewis County Creeks namely Lucas Creek and Salmon Creek. They say more of the gravel beds are exposed when the waterd recede in the late Summer. But I also thought the winter exposed more bedrock and eroded layers away to expose more treasures. I found a shallow creek with some Jasper and Petrified Wood I could walk through with rain boots between Tenino and Ranier near my house. I would certainly think that is better in the Winter. Even though they said Summer I will try to scout locations if nothing else. Peace, SSSSpaceman SSSpliff

hey! I am not far from carnation at all! But even if folks wanna head south, I'm game. Preferably in warmer weather, without the constant spitting-at-you rain.

Thank you so much Turned stone! HEHEHE I am so excited now!!!!!!!!!!!!! Johnson creek is the place I found the other day and only had about 30 seconds to look through but found a couple of peices of Jasper and one peice of Petrified wood. I live rite on SR 507 Litterally and my house is about 5 miles from the Steam Plant and Mine, I'll have to find the mine dump site Wooo Hooo! And a pay ranch too I thought all of those were in Oregon . Maybe this is why as far as I dig in the yard I keep finding Carnelian. Peace, SSSSpaceman SSSpliff

I don't know if the Sagenite is found up here or not, the only ones I could find any refference to were the ones on ebay and a few other "old stock" cutting material or cabs from the Central Oregon Coast. Maybe someone else would have a better idea. Hopefully the mine tailings weren't paved over. Would be fun to be able to go find some raw carnelian. The beach agate we get on the coast is beautiful... I can only imagine what it would look like straight out of the ground

LOL I think Space has all the carnelian left in the state. I swear he brings boxes full to work every night. I think the former owner of his home REALLY liked carnelian.
Ok if there is anything in that book about Pierce County, please shoot me a PM, or heck post it here, I'm thinking we got the makings of a rock club LOL

I think the only way to "Hunt" Carnelian in my yard is to go out at night with a flashlight, because if you go during the day it's not hunting at all it's just picking it up. I bend down to pick up one peice and it's laying next to 3 or 4 other peices, that's not "Hunting" in my opinion doesn't the word Hunting mean some sort of work is involved? It's more like Hunting with a machine gun . I will be going to the mine tomorrow to see what I can find. The Skookumchuck is quite high on the banks rite now so you know it's pulling lots of stuff into the water out of the banks. Peace, SSSSpaceman SSSpliff

LOL Jimbo, with that belly of yours, I'd say bending over is work! Hence now ya know why my big fat arse buys rocks instead of hunting them LOL. I think you should have a contest with the kids...who ever picks up the most rocks in a week gets a prize...They should have it all picked up quick like a bunny then LOL

Tacomaguy, our "club" kinda fizzled, we only went on one rock hunt. Life just kinda got in the way. Hopefully the other "members" will come back online soon and we can set something up. It wasn't like a real club, just some of us getting together for lunch and a rock hunt Maybe we'll be able to get that going again!

Hello all,
I'm new to the board and a bonafide clueless newb. I live in Newcastle, Wa and am desperate to do some rockhounding! I really, really don't mind quartz at all. In fact crystal points make me go "yippee!".
I'd be willing to get together with this group for a trip. I even am trying to join some of the bigger washington clubs. Ok, well just the Bellevue Rock Club.
I've discovered that most rockhounds are secret-squirrel with their information. It is theirs and if you don't know the masonic greeting and try to go by yourself, you'll find you'll accidentally rob from private property (haha on you!). =( So I admire those who are open with their sites and information in this thread.

Hey Spaced.. I use to hunt and fish the Skookumchuck valley before they put the dam in.. There was an old dam in the valley which had failed and left a huge hole in the river below it. On the gravel bars just below that were gobs of Pet and Carnelian. That dam is at the bottom of the lake now. No one lived in that valley and I remember many a summer week spent camping and searching the river there.
If you go up close to the bottom of the dam just below spillway you will find a spot that looks kind of like a huge sink. I have found a bit of Pet and Jasper there.
There is also a place at the entrance to the road that goes across Porcupine ridge that has a lot of stuff laying in the ditch.
