Hi I know most of you are from the US, but I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions of good places to go rock hunting in the UK. I'm near to Manchester which is pretty central, and I regulary go to the coast in Wales to visit my parents. Any hints of good areas will be appreciated. (sorry if this in in the wrong area) Rose

Hey Rose, I would also be interested in knowing of any rocks in particular that are found in Wales. My great-great-grandfather was always very adamant that my family was Welsh. Not English, Welsh. He made a really big distinction!

Yes the Welsh are very proud of their distinction from England.
I'm planning on taking the kids to the beach next time we go and see what we can find.

Hey Rose, I did a little research and the most plentiful rock in Wales seems to be Malachite. That would be because of the copper ore mines. Malachite is soft, but can make some very striking rocks when polished.
I keep looking at the Welsh Love Spoons, if I only thought I could actually make one....

Thanks Ron
My parents live near to a place called the great orme, which has copper mines in it - I might go up there nd have a wonder around next time. Although last time we went for a day out up there my dad managed to break his leg !

Hi rose,
I am from yorkshire there is a lot of good rocks around the east coast of yorkshirein fact all the coast from Berwick on tweed to Hull , namly Agate, jasper, limestone ,cornelian, citrine, this coast has a lot of boulder clay fossils and of course the Whitby Jet if your lucky!!
Liverpool (That should be pretty near you?-limestone, shale, quartzite, basalt ,grit ,quartz, schist, serpentine ,dolerite, of Holy head island --serpentine, agate, jasper,
Wales has all these + and the south coast up from the Lizard is very rich in allsorts of rocks
I have a old book "Pebble Polishing " by Edward Fletcher, its got some good information and tips + maps in it I could scan them & send them on if you like, Email me john.mattison@breathe.com .If youwanted you could get a copy in a good book shop that do searches for old books.
There is a lot of pebbles around Get busy, if you fail there is always MM on stockport road, but you won't,

Thanks Jack, I'll have to get busy - only just seen your reply I collected a load of stones off the beach from Wales over the new year - not sure what they are but they look really pretty already without having done anything to them. Looks like I have already converted my five year old, he came off the beach with his pockets bulging with rock he had picked up that he liked ! I will email you

Not sure really, I think he just sees me doing it and so picks them up for me - although any rock will do! he came home from school the other day with a couple of little pieces of red building brick that he had found ;D He was very pleased with himself ! But they both love the beach so they enjoy going.
My older one (7) is pretty interested in the rock tumbling and keeps asking if they are ready yet.

Hi Billy D,
Fab Scotland!, wonderfull area Montrose, I got quite a lot from that area ,Auchmithie to be precise near Abroath So much Jasper you could just about shovel it in to a bag and such lovley colours to,Agate to!
Do you polish? try, TRY any that feels hard , smooth and heavy (in size) Don,t go for stuff much bigger than your thum size to 1st joint, and a smaller selection to fill your barrel 3/4 full. After 3 or 4 stages and polish ,6weeks to 2 month later you should be enthuased to carry on to perfection,in a fantastic hobby, that keeps you busy 12 months of the year, if you want!! ;D
Yours,
Jack,

If you want to do a interesting google search try "rock tumbling" hobby site.
I tried to find the uk site , like this one but couldnt I had it on my computer but the hard drive went last December, and I lost everything.
I got some nice agate and jasper on the coast in January, one pice especialy like a bit of tree with a stary center
