I know that here in WI. they made it legal to hunt small game off of rr tracks a few years back. It's the best rabbit hunting, in the tall weeds next to the tracks. Pheasants also. I don't think you'll get in trouble walking the lines and picking rocks, unless your doing it with a Bobcat or something.

That's interesting. I didn't know that specifically although I have seen people hunt from the rail right-of-way. However, since 9/11, people have been harrassed by the police for simply taking photos of passing trains. On example was in Morton Grove, IL (suburban Chicago). A guy was on the public platform at a Metra station, out of the way of any commuters, taking photos of the trains. The railroad police and the city police came very close to out right arresting him. They even checked his name with Homeland Security. He made a big stink about it afterward in the newspapers. It was also in articles in the railroad indusrtry magazines. The police eventually apologized and Metra issued a policy about photos. Second example, the Metra terminal in downtown Chicago, Saturday morning, a guy takes his young son for a train ride. He gets off at the terminal and stands his son at the end of the track to take a picture. Police escort him out of the station temporarily confiscating his camera. Lawsuit pending. There have been several other instances where someone is parked in his car in a legal parking area along a road along RR tracks. He is leaning on his car, not on RR property, with a camera taking pictures of trains and the police tell him to move because it's not leagl to take photos of trains anymore. There have been instances where people have been issued citations for tresspass in RR property in Bloomington, IL and Galesburg, IL. The Bloomington one was simply taking a shortcut across the tracks to get to the other side.
Now I agree the RR company doesn't want anyone getting hurt on their property or having the safety of their emplyees endingered, so I have no problem with the RR taking leagl action about unreasonable tresspass, but just standing out of the way on the edge (or even off the property) can't be a big deal.
Sorry about ranting. So it's OK to carry a gun and walk along tracks but not with a camera?

Come on KG your talking about the state of IL. Isn't that also where the govener let a butt load of convicts outta jail the day before he left office? In rual WI. there are plenty of train tracks where there might be 1 train a day go by. I used to hunt the tracks outside of Beloit all the time and over by Delavan WI. Just outside Elkhorn WI. last year I was bagging 3 rabbits a day, by walking the tracks. The last ten years I have seen two trains go by and that was walking/hunting for 5 miles in one direction and hunting that way most everyother weekend during hunting season. Rual WI. is alot different than walking tracks down by Chicago, and Bloomington. I will now say take your chances, in heavy populated areas. I will also ask, what are they gonna do if they confront you walking the tracks and catch you with a pocket full of rocks? Put you in prison, making you bust rocks for hard labor? I'd like to get confronted and taken away for taking a picture of a american train, and being an american. Can we say lawsuite together?

EarthDog, The Dells are fun for all ages , my Father In Law pay's for everything when we go out there so it's even better. He owns a large transmission shop in Schamburg. We have stayed at The Kalahari www.kalahariresort.com/WI/Main.aspx and let me tell ya it's like staying inside Disneyland as opposed to staying in the Disneyland Hotel across the street. And Go-Carts and Jet Boat Tours and I could go on for hours. Last time we went though the trip was not so pretty for me. We flew into Chicago Wednesday night, about an hour later I started throwing up. Friday everyone left for The Kalahari and I stayed behind because I was still throwing up every 15 minutes. Saturday I felt a little better so my Father In Law (Bless Him) drove back to Chicago to pick me up to take me out for the last day. The whole trip I felt fine we got there in the evening and went to Tommy Bartlets something or other with an optical illusions section to walk through. Dam that sucked, I had to leave and sit next to the car and throw up some more, that lasted all night and I finally felt better on Sunday, the day we drove back to Chicago so I could get on a plane to come home. I think I lost 15 pounds in those 4 days. Next time I'm out there though I will let you know in advance. I'll be going to Chicago sometime this summer probably, The Dells are up in the air still though but I will let you know when I find out. Peace, SSSSpaceman SSSpliff

Earthdog, you're right, of course. I just got carried away about something that to me is upsetting, but those examples have happened. Obviously it hasn't stopped me from collecting an occasional rock or taking a photo here and there. Click on my web page icon to see my train photos.

Hey KG, no problem. I understand. I would get worked up also if I got bothered by some punk ass cop or security for the train system, for taking a pic. of a train. The train hobby is huge. Like I said I'd love to get snatched for taking a pic. in our own country. I'd be asking for more than those 8 people won on the powerball. I've always wanted to get into the model train hobby, but my wife would surely divorce me then. I can see all of her craft stuff going out and train tracks running through all 3 rooms in the basement. With all the rocks I have I could make some killer rock quarry scenes

Spaceman, we have stayed at treasure island in feb. when it was like 5 degrees out. Going to the indoor waterpark then was great. The wife ate some grouper the second night there and got sick as a dog, we had the jaccuzi tub in our room and I filled it up with bubble bath stuff and turned it on. Bubbles 5' high. Were you talking about the "ducks" tour rides? Those are pretty cool. Have you been to "nigs" for a swig?

EarthDog, Sorry to hear I am not the only one who had to be sick while trying to enjoy time off, I don't wish that on anyone! The bubbles in the jaccuzi sounds hillarious though, wish I could have seen that . We were going to go on the Ducks Tours but we went on these Jet Boats with flat bottoms, they took us out and did 360's in the water, what an adrenalin rush! We came back soaked, but no one noticed untill we stoped for dinner and the place was air conditioned. Peace, SSSSpaceman SSSpliff

I will be going to Chicago this summer too, I was hopeing there would be some good stuff near the lake. The only place I know of near the lake is Navy Peir though. My In-Laws live in Schaumburg . We sometimes go to the Wisconsin Dells when we are out there too. Peace, SSSSpaceman SSSpliff Your kidding me - Schaumburg? That's where I grew up. Small world.

Great questions, I found out I will probably be going out there and to Schamburg and the Dells in late July or Early August. Would be a nice way to spend some time. Any good rock hunting spots, or shops in Schamburg or the Dells?
Peace, SSSSpaceman SSSpliff

I'm near Aurora now. No rock shops or rock hound sites that I know of around here. I don't even think there is a rock club within 45 minutes.

Nice list. Hoffman Estates borders on Schaumburg, but I don't know anything about that shop or any of the other ones. Some look like ones that I could reasonably checkout the next time I'm in the area visiting my mother.

Yep, Hoffman Estates is closest to me, but it looks like many of them wouldn't sell tumbling rough. Specimans and finished stones. Of course I'm just going by the name, so what do I know.

Think I'm in. I just printed off their flyer and directions. They have a silent auction - you interested in that at all?
Who else is in?
