I spent a week in Portland at the end of April, and went to the coast one day. We hit 4 beaches from Newport and South. The best one we tried had lots of agates... Its called Tokatee. Directions: go down from Newport to Yachats; keep on going til you get to Tenmile Creek; go yet another 1 1/2 miles. Pull out is on the Right; descend to the beach and go Left [South]; climb over the large rocky outcrop right on the beach about 200-300 yards from the descent trail; after you get back on the sand, there will be gravel all over this beach; agates abound in the gravel. Warning: I was told that this beach changes structure during different times of year; translates that sometimes the gravel will be washed out or buried under sand. ed/cuervo

Sad to report that my car broke down and what was originally scheduled to be 4 days with my great-aunt, interspersed with 2 days of rockhounding became 2 days with my great-aunt and no rockhouding. But at the Lava Lands Visitor Center I picked up their publication giving these web sites for info about rockhouding in CENTRAL Oregon (since this has developed into a discussion about Glass Butte, etc). The publication states you can pick up obsidian at Glass Butte and thunder eggs at White Fir Springs and that rocks collected must not be for commercial resale. www.fs.fed.us/r6/centraloregon/recreation/rockhounding/index.shtml for info about rockhounding Maps for sale: www.prineville-crookcounty.org from Prineville's chamber of commerce www.or.blm.gov/Prineville from the Bureau of Land Management www.fs.fed.us/r6/centraloregon from Ochoco National Forest Hope everyone (else!) had fun rockhounding in Oregon this summer... smadelinker

I was down at Gold Beach, Oregon from July 20 - 25th this year, and did some picking up of rocks down there. They have those neat looking black and white rocks all over the beach by the north jetty. I also found some other interesting looking rocks and hope to show off some polished ones to the RTH members when they're tumbled.
