I am on the way there! I've already had a lot of talks with people like fairburned about new locations (new to me, that is). I'd appreciate any additional, especially for Wyoming. I'm interested in Farson petrified wood, which knocked my socks off at a rock show recently. I found Farson on the map and it is doable, but I don't know whether there are any collecting areas or if it is all private or what.

I think about 70% of Wyoming is public land. Article in the Rock & Gem from April 2005 says Buffalo Wyo. has pet wood and lots of blue, black, red, yellow agates. Check with the BLM people at 1425 Fort st.
I am not sure if this is on your planned route but if it is you could end up with some nice stuff.

I did a search for Farson petrified wood and it took me to this link, but I didn't notice any of it but there are some good directions to where you might find some: www.thegemshop.com/petwood.htmHope I have helped. Harry

Thank you both of you! Harry this is a great site and I didn't have it before. It will probably help me pull together other info that I have and create a route. Jeff, I don't remember if I read about the Buffalo deposits before, but I know that it is on one of our possible routes. Thanks!

Doggone it!!!!! I never saw this post until yesterday---had I realized you were 'doing' WY too, I could have easily sent you some info--we hunted the Farson areas in June, opalized pet wood, etc. By accident, I found a pretty neat book at a bookstore in the Wall Drug complex, titled 'Rockhounding Wyoming'. That plus having a son who has lived there for years and is a great explorer helped me get some very pretty stuff this year. I am so sorry that I missed this post!!!!!!

Has anyone hunted around the Manville area? Manville is just south of Lusk. I have seen a very large specimen of a Fairburn Agate just three weeks ago from the Manville area. It was embedded in an ugly brown colored limestone. The Agate itself must of weighed at least 4 pounds. Lots of different shades of red, it was awesome. Where can one get a book that lists the local landowners to get permission to hunt their land? Thanks ahead of time fellow rockers!

Wow. I have hardly had any internet access and I missed all these responses. Tomorrow we drive across WY and I hope I find a good route to do some quick Farson hounding. Of course the car is already weighted down so much from South Dakota that I don't know where I can put any more rocks.

Hi Sly, Since we wanted to go to the Farson area, and we were coming from Old Faithful, we took the road down to Jackson and then 191 south to Farson. From there we went east on WYO 28 and then south on the tri-territorial road following directions in "Rockhounding Wyoming" supplemented by other references. We went back to Farson and then to I-80 and we are now spending the night in Cheyenne. It was a slow trip through the parks to Jackson aside from the detour for rockhounding. We stocked up on western microbrews at the Albertson's in Jackson and got a couple sandwiches which was a good choice. There were hugely bad looking storm clouds lurking out there on the whole trip down 191 and we kept praying that the ones to the south were going to move on east before we did. We really did just miss them, there and later on the interstate. I wrote a bunch about South Dakota in another thread. I believe I'll maybe post this as a trip report in the General Board.

hi cina, nice to meet you. I really hope I get back to WYO sometime soon but next year maybe not...we'll see. I use the Graham book also as my main guide, but I have some good material off the internet as well. Over a period of several years, we've been to a bunch of his sites including Bison Basin Rd. twice, for apple green jade -- also found some Sweetwater agates there -- tried to search in the Wind River around Lander, without much luck getting to any gravel, Farson area as noted above, and a Forest Service road south of Jackson off of 191. Those are just the ones I remember! Of course there are many many more. I love searching out these places. Can't imagine what it would be like to live in Casper WYO. Did you see my picture of Hell's Half Acre (in the "this is me" thread in the photo section)?

Pup--shoot! I didn't know you were in the Lander area on your trip. I found some awesome rocks in Sinks canyon, just a few minutes from Lander. There is just one road to go collecting on where it is legal to take stuff. I found out about this site from my son's father in law, he remembered going there with his own dad years and years ago.

As for hell's half acre It is now closed it made me very sad:( I moved to Casper 3 years ago from Chicago IL. I can not think of even one reason to move ever again I think Wyoming is Heaven and oh boy the rock's and even if you find none on your trip you got to spend time in what I think is the best place in the world!! Also if you get a chance to meet the people *at times this can be hard to do we are spread out* salt of the earth allways happy to help out. I hope you can come on back soon and my offer is good just drop me a line... Cina PS found some plant fossils in some red rock not sure what it is got it on Muddy Mountain that is the other side of Casper Mountain where I found the Red agates

I posted the photo in the this is me thread...it is me, sitting sadly on their front steps. I'd been there twice before, years and years apart, and almost missed it this time because of the road construction. But you could still walk around the rim of the badlands and it is so cool. We're kind of puzzled about it -- like, the signage, what there is of it, makes it sound like the area is a protected state or national park or something. So the concession shut down cause nobody came? I picked up a bunch of fossilized algae on the Farson trip, also some small but very nice pieces of pet wood, one of which is a tiny twig of a limb cast, and some mysterious black rocks that I'm not sure about. I'll post some photos when I get some time to take them.

I am not to sure why it closed but have heard a buzz of it is privet owned and the owners did not make the cash to keep it open it was doing well when the movie was made and for a long time after people came to see where the move was made but I don't think they came for the gorages view it had to offer *how very sad! Starship troppers was not that good of a flim anyway........... but by spending time out their you could see how it could be another world hehehe

In the future, the Earth is at war with a race of alien bugs from the planet Klendathu. A group of eager teenagers enrol in the military and are soon in the thick of the action. For some, this means the relative safety of the space fleet, while for others it's a terrifying in the mobile infantry, the frontline troops in the battle with the bugs. LOL this is the summery of the movie I have some nice pics from a friend that was a extra ill try to find them for youbut hear are 2 I will find the others soon I hope... Cina
