I've been lurking here for a few days and have already learned a lot from reading your posts. I haven't actually started tumbling yet ... I bought my son a 3 lb tumbler for his birthday, and am going crazy because I want to open it now! He's about to turn 7, which is a little young for rock tumbling, but he has a very strong interest in rocks. I think he's going to enjoy this! Meanwhile, I've been reading as much as I can to prepare myself, and am getting excited about it. I have a hunch that we may need more than one tumbler to keep the peace around here....

welcome to the forum, kurocks! i don't think 7 is too young for the hobby, especally with encouragement and some help from a parent. he may get bored as it does take a lot of patience with just one tumbler, but i'm sure he will really like the end result. here is a very good posting from one of our members that will really help you get started: forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/index.cgi?board=tips&action=display&thread=1105871635good luck! WELCOME kurocks hes not too young just keep taking him out for rock hunts and let him see every time you wash and rinse the rocks so he can see them change in each step and i bet he will stay interested -- start planing a project to use the rocks when there done -- it doesn't have to be anything big maybe a nice vase to fill with polished rocks that he can say he did with the rocks he polished ,, might help keep him interested till the rock bug bites --all i did was show my daughter some polished rocks and she knew more names then i did and what they where for (metaphysically) she was 13 when i started and when i asked if she wanted a tumbler of her own she was very excited -- but since she don't live with me i think its wearing off not being here with me but she flips for all the stone jewelery hahaha

He already has a bag of rough rocks and gems he got at a mining exhibit at a local park. They sell bags of rubble and let the kids wash it in the "stream" to find the rocks. He's done this several times, and doesn't seem to get tired of the rocks. He keeps taking them out, sorting them, and asking questions about how rock jewelry is made. So I think the rock bug may have already bitten. The hard part is waiting while the stones polish ... but I think he will be thrilled with the results.

Hi Kurocks, Welcome to the forum. I think that's wonderful that you son is interested in rocks and what can be done with them. And it will be a great hobby for dad and son to participate in together. Your right, waiting is the hardest so learning patience will be something that comes along too. In the between times, do the rockhounding to find more to tumble. Again, welcome to the forum!!

Welcome to the group and the message boards. Kids are never too young to get into this hobby...and parents are never too old either.

Kristi, You're son will do just fine! It's going to be a great hobby for the both of you. I started taking my youngest daughter when she was about 4. She didn't know what to look for, but she still enjoyed picking up pretty rocks....even the little round black ones! (true story) Us adults call those Rabbit Poopies, not Apache Tears. Both my daughters now 12 and 9 thoroughly enjoy going rockhounding with me, and it's been a great bond for father and daughters, even though they think I'm possesed, which I am! Have fun with the tumbler. this is a great forum and WELCOME! Steve

LOL! Same thing has already happened with my 4-y.o. (with more than one kind of poop). I'm hoping there won't be any more confusion about that now! This is a great forum.

Just a welcome to the group- Oh and 1 tumbler is not enough- 2 is even worse- 3 are unbearable- 4 are almost as bad- 5 are almost enough- 6 is getting there- 7 well may as well have 8 or 9 or 10! I just got a second one (a 2 barrel CE with only 1 barrel) and it has made life much worse (now I want more!!!!) I told the wife I would stop when I had 5 barrels running at a time- she just rolled her eyes and walked away!

Hey Kristi,
Go to the General Rocks Board and then the "Just for Fun" thread and explain your user name. Being an Oklahoma State Grad, I'm hoping it isn't a reference to a Big 12 Rival.

Welcome to the board Kurock. My grandson is six and he loves rocks and tumbling. my granddaughter brings me rocks most just gravel she's three and too young but she tries, those rocks are more special then the ones that cost a arm and a leg.

Thanks again for the welcome! Finally got to open the gifts today, and he's very excited about the tumbler. I'm positive that one won't be enough ... but it will do for a start.

Yes it is just the start- Lets see I have a 3 lb Thumbler, a kiddie tumbler that has a dead barrel, a 2 barrel CE unit with only one barrel (a reserected one from another member) I have a dremel with diamond burrs and a grinder/polisher that will be up and running real soon, plus a Home Depot tile saw!
