Well....I guess if you can purchase one for 17.95 shipping included then there isn't any point in trying to make one that might not work properly.
Thanks again for the info folks. ;D

Well, that $17.95 PLUS actual shipping of $4.05. I just got one from Ron, but it was drilled crooked. I am waiting to see how he wants to replace the part.
I think you can also grab from the sides and then put the clamp flat in the vise.

Well, Ron's response was pretty poor. He just told me that all returns and exchanges had to go to Lorotone as a warrenty issue. I am going to ship the item back to RON, and file with PayPal for a full refund.
Basically instead of returning a defective (yes, the defect is plain to see) to them, he decided to sell it to me, and then tell me it was my problem.
Do not deal with Ron's Rocks!

Man, I am sorry to hear that too, Daniel! I have purchased from him in the past and had good luck. I would have recommended him to anyone but that just ain't right! Was it in a sealed package from lortone or did he package it? I would think it fairly important to have the thing all line up as it should. Good luck to you and let us know, and post it in the vendors section if he don't take care of it like he should. Bill

Forgot to mention to you, John. Duh!! I had to read your post twice, but I never even thought about turning the grabber the other way to secure it in the vise!! Thanks for pointing that out for me. Now I can mount it what ever way works the best. I wonder where my brain is from time to time!! Thanks for moving this thread over here too. Bill

no biggie bill thanks for takin the time to make it for us ----and one more tip with laying the grabber on its side is to make sure you make most of the rock be at the top of the grabber pointing towards the lid of the saw if not when too much is stickin out the bottom it will hit the arbor nut and make it stop movin you will see what i mean the first time it happens hahaha i did i couldent fig why the auto feed kept jumpin back -----

Well Ron is now saying he would have worked with me ... and that he knew Lorotone would have stepped up ... and that I did not have to do a PayPal dispute - BUT in the course of 3 email exchanges he still did not offer an apology for failing to notice the defect, or for my inconvenience, or for just sending a kurt message that sent the wrong signals. In other words I'm the one being unreasonable and he is the aggrevied party. (What a laugh.). His view is that if he ships them out exactly as he recieves them, then it is a warrenty issue. I think this might apply to things in sealed boxes, or more complex equipment - but this was just taped in a piece of cardboard by Ron (not at Lorotone). If you follow his argument, he could reship cracked stuff or stuff with missing parts and it would all be waranty issue. My view is that there is always room to take things dead on arrival back to the vendor who profited from selling it.

Thanks again for the demo Bill. I think I'm going with the 5" grabber from Kingsley North.... the smaller grabbers will not work with my vise.. too small.... and from what Daniel posted it sounds like Rons might not be the best place to buy from....
Oh yea... and thanks to John for digging up this thread and moving it here....

I have made several of these grabbers for members of our local rock club . To machine clamping slots, I simply place Aluminum plates in the mill vise at a 45 degree angle and crossfeed with a standard 4 flute end mill. The Aluminum seems to grip sufficently with a 90 degree included angle. If a specialty gripper (odd angle) were needed, a person could get a dovetail cutter through McMaster- Carr in Chicago. 1-630-833-0300

Thanks again for this tutorial Bill.... I purchased a used grabber for $11.00 and cleaned it up with a file that just fit the angles perfectly. It would have been pretty nerve wracking to clamp it down without seeing this tutorial first.... Dan

These are also known as rock clamps, and a google search will show up some under $20. They are an indispensible rock saw accessory. That's how you get the other half of the rock sawed. Every rock saw should have one. In fact, it is my opinion that any saw with a vise should come equipped with one. Spacegold
