Hello. I have been watching, reading and on occasion I post, but I have not registered and I believe I may not. The main reason is the negative feelings and thoughts to strangers who wish to learn or become a part of this board. Here is a prime example where a person asked a question: forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/index.cgi?board=tips&action=display&thread=1118155008Looks to me like this question or poll should have been posted in Board Issues? If we practice what we preach maybe... just maybe others would follow suit. I do believe I will get many negative responces to this post as so many others have in the past. Will I be back? Who knows? Please don't got looking for negativity where none was intended. In the example you cite, the person was making a very helpful comment... they suggested that the person re-ask their question on the most active part of this forum. I haven't read the "Lapidary Tips" or "Board Issues" section in more than a month, so would not see any questions asked there.

Although we have a great many people here in our group our hobby is really in a decline.
If we ban "guests" from posting we will loose a lot of potential rockhounds who might have joind us.
If we do it as a "trial" those people will not come back and we will loose their interest.
I don't really know what the problem is with "guest" postings. If you don't like what someone is saying all you have to do is "click" and you're out of there!!
The LAST thing you should is reply to it!!!

I find it unfortunate - at best - that one bad apple will spoil this for others.
Prior to joining, I posted many, many, many questions and got very informative answers. It would be a shame to now allow others to do the same. I learned so many thing even before I joined, and of course, much more since I joined.
Due to this, I had to vote to allow anyone to post.
My two cents - ~stoned

Take your pick but...I think that "Just Guest" appears to be a poor judgement of character or the argumentative sort of chap or is misinterpreting the good people in this group or perhaps I am running off about something I know nothing about...We DO NOT look down upon anyone for asking questions, that's how we all learn. If you ask it in the wrong forum, generally it still gets answered and we tell you which forum you should have been using for future reference. The last thing anyone here would do is reproach sonmeone for using the wrong forum. Misrepresenting oneself is another matter indeed. This website seems to be a non-commercial site. Yes there are people who make a living off of rocks, but I think you can argue that they give much more than they get. For me, that is the important thing; People give more than they get.
There are NO negative feelings toward Guests, just an open desire to have them join as members. Pretty positive approach IMHO.
When a Guest pretends a commercial post is an honest opinion or recommendation, we respond in kind.
I certainly would not be surprised if "Just Guest" IS our mysterious guest poster.

I'm new here and hope what I have to say doesn't upset amy one! How long has this board been around? It's a shame that one person out of what six hundred can make a great board change! I read almost all posting on the board and the rude ones are a small percentage very very small! If every one ignores people like this thay get bored and go away, it's only fun if you let them get to us. should we let one act from a very childish person change the way of a place were any one was welcome to ask questions or add a comment. , some people will come and look around and then leave and never return because of having to register, and there are times when you can't register, it took me quite a while before I could. I think if we do this we are going to give this person the greatest ego boost they have had in awhile, I can hear them say, "Man I just put it too six hundred or so people , Man am I cool or what." I really would hate to think that once again one jackass has ruined it for every one once again!

I have to say guys and gals - that this is probably the closest to the way I think from conrock " Although we have a great many people here in our group our hobby is really in a decline. Tom The interesting thing about Toms point of view (well to me anyway, is that there is both a start and an end). START "Although we have a great many people here in our group our hobby is really in a decline." Thats a truth I'm afraid. But only because of lack of information. Making things shiny will always appeal to mankind (because it is representative of bettering ourselves?) - Even the nastiest little sproggs always seem to warm to rock polishing and the results - its something they are proud to either have created or been given. END "The LAST thing you should is reply to it!!!" For me personally its a case of "shrinkage" - I just shrink their little spiteful comments into the nothingness they represent. I'm often satisfied with my own internal reply of "errr yeah - cya". Thats because when it comes to this hobby, I KNOW THE SCORE. And that does it for me. Why should I bother answering a plonker? Yup - not answering them is smooth. However - that only leaves me with the question of what to do with their tiny tiny little markings (posts - like cat piss up a tree) - delete them ASAP. Should visitors join first before posting? Its up to you guys - but it can slow growth - then theres a measure to be taken and weighed up. Anyways (shrinking it) Isnt life great? Well after today I think so. I went fishing today after a bitching load of work these last months. I got 30 fish - no bigguns - but 30 was nice. It was a BIG day out for me. You guys did the rocks - cos youre lucky and im not at the moment time wise. You also did tonnes of other stuff and got on with your lives. A little ponce came on here and "took on" the friendship of a close knitt hobby board. UNLUCKY FOR HIM. Laters all - Im sunburned and about to burn even more in a hot bath (to get rid of stinking fishslime (its the Bream and Roach - they slime )) No probs from this side - I'll do whatever the vote says - then we can all also check on the new member signups and see what the score is. Weve a lifetime of this - theres no rush. Mark.

Hmmm to post or not to post- That is the question? Uncle will could not have said it better! I enjoy the occasional pest in here- Stirs things up very nicely- But on the other forums I frequent ALL posters must register- and yes they do get slugs that love nothing more than to poke a stick at a hornets nest! The Admin says Bye Bye and some come back under an alias (kinda like Andy reappearing as Mark!) So that being said I voted to have everyone register! I want to be able to put a name to a post- Plus I find myself ignoring some guest post (what an elitist I am!) which could lead to a good question being ignored.

Can I change my vote? I think now that if you have questions, you should be able to ask as a guest & not register - if they find the need, I assume they'll register in due time (who cares about this "guest" anyways) I do wonder why someone who seems to hate this board so much would waste so much of his time posting repeated comments. Aren't idiots entertaining?

Tweet they get there jollies from stirring things up! I feel the need to try to scold them but what should be done is to just ignore them! I guess if I were more Mature, I would just ignore them, But I can't help myself! (hmmm maybe I'm the one who needs help- take two agates and re-post in the morning!)

addenda to my previous post:
i really DO think this is the best site on the net. we may appear clique-ish on occasion, i think (now that i've been a member for a WHOLE YEAR) when i joined this board it was a smallish group and everyone was having a ball sharing pictures and trading/selling rocks or locations on where to find/buy it. i was impressed that the group had like minded folks from all over the world.
overall, not much has changed, really. some of the peeps that used to post a lot haven't lately for what ever reason, some of the "newbies" are quite accomplished. it's a joy to share their (newfound?) love(addiction) with whomever is truly interested in the appreciation of the beauty of stone.
when the Karma meter comes out at the end of Marks path he will find it up there in the good point region. and Connrock is right, ignore the bad posts, don't fall to the dark side (as much as you may feel the need to sometimes).
this is how we will continue to rule!

i'm cool with either decision. i have enjoyed learning from all of you and still have lots more to learn. so whatever you decide suits me fine.
can't find anything at all negative, snobbish, or inappropriate with cher's response on the apache tears. she gave a warm and hearty welcome and tried to guide jean to a section where she would get responses from those members who do know the answer to that question (and someone does know the answer just not me lol). i usually check the general section and the photo section unless something really catches my eye in the others. i guess it's easy to misread things sometimes but what i saw was that cher cared that nobody had answered jean's question and since she couldn't she hoped it would get moved to a section where it would get seen and answered so jean didn't think people were ignoring her.
"just guest" you must be interested in rock tumbling or you wouldn't be reading, watching and posting. join up and put your 2 cents in regularly. you might know something i need to know!

I don't have a problem with anyone that posts as a "guest". But it sure fries my bacon when a "guest" posts a put down or some other nasty something against one of the regular members that we all know and love.
In other words, "don't you be sayin' nothin' bad about our Banjo!" LOL!

Hey Handy Andy aka Mark,
Can I change my vote from NO to Yes Please. After reading all these interesting comments I feel I was a bit hasty with my judgement. Thinking back when I first went on this site , I was also directed in a friendly way to introduce myself and register...which I duly did . And Lo and Behold , I am still here.
I love this site and this board and we should leave it open to anyone . The bad apples rot away anyway so leave them be and give them no reply..indeed IGNORE !!
My 2 cents

Here is an example for dis-allowing posts by guests. This type of thing has happened a couple times to us on the Cascade Mycology forum. It scares off legitimate members who may have children and/or morals or are just normal folks. www.cascademyco.org/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=gen_disc;action=display;num=1118404225That garbage, and being a recent victim of a flaming spammer, I vote to have registration required previous to posting. I know I'm pretty new here, but I am here because this forum is a safe, fun place to come. I think limiting the posting will at least help in keeping it this way. Fatty

There was another case about a week ago...(hmm seems I can't find examples as well as everyone else) where a guest asked a question about changing a blade on their slab saw and another guest gave a condescending response that angered the person that asked the question. I'm sure that didn't give too good of an impression of the board.
Last year I lurked here all summer and really wasn't to eager to sign up because of a certain member that was always being contradictory and just trying to stir up some trouble. (We call them trolls on another board - Trolling for some reactions). Whose to say others aren't just lurking and don't want to sign up because of some of the rude responses that have appeared lately by a guest.
It really doesn't take anything to sign up. I've signed up a several other boards just to ask a question or two. I've also left other boards because of rude responses I've seen over time.
I must admit though, this board does have an awesome track record overall of being upbeat and very helpful. (Maybe too helpful, 5 tumblers, a vibe, a rock saw plus other miscellaneous stuff have appeared in my shop in a little over a year.)
