NOT ANOTHER GAME

How 'bout a poem of a mermaid and cigar...

Not built to endure, to edify future generations
by the twist of light through her translucent face
soon she will lump, gel, deform
and hoar into something else.
For this: fading, her deliberate making from stuff
which simply cannot endure a museum,
shes considered low, crafty, hobbyist fun.

But she's no knock-off, no scrawled note, my mermaid.
Ephemeral above the carving table,
her hair already beginning to dull
as her maker still labors on her long extended tail
shes real as his huffed breath,
part of this particular moment
of cold, flannel and wonder.

Each chip of chisel,
each knock of rag-wrapped mallet
tacks it out now,
now, now.
