So, when are you going to run for pres csroc. With that much thought you'd win for sure.
Anyway, the rich and super rich pay little in taxes each year because they have already made the money, paid the tax when earned and now only pay tax on the additional income they make from thier investments - ie the system we have now. I think Terrsa Hines Karry pays very little tax for this same reason. A national sales tax would stick it to the rich every time they buy the fancy house, boat, car etc.

Seems to me it would stick it to the poor because they basically have to spend all their income. No discretionary income there.

In General, doing away with income tax in favor of a flat sales tax is considered to be a regressive tax system. While it seems in theory, that the playing field would be level, it would tend not to be. Sales taxes tend to hurt lower income people. They are being taxed on life nescesities, and often time the tax takes away from their ability to get those things. Our founding fathers had a system in place in which the rich paid for the government. Poor people paid nothing. This made sense at the time, as the governemnt was designed to protect the interests of the rich...not the poor. It is true, there is no fair tax system. One does have to wonder however, who could do without some of their moeny. A poor family making less than 10K, and bearly getting by, or someone like Bill Gate, who would not really be hurting if he had to cough up a couple million of the Billions he is sitting on. Certainly he would say that was not fair, but then again...he isn't hungry, poor, and without medical care.

Bambam, You touched a raw nerve when you mention Bill Gates; a traitor to his country if there ever was one. At a time when New Orleans and the Gulf Coast are realing and the Northeast still has not recovered economically from the Bush Economic woes, he announces that he will invest 1.7Billion dollars in India; the net effect is that still more American jobs will be lost at a time when we can least afford it; the worst part is that you and I will subsidize this as he will get income tax credits/deductions that we effectively pay for. csroc
