Depends on what freebie package you get, but make sure to get headphones, digger, coil cover so you don't scratch up the coil, and the batteries and charger would be my choice. Will save you tons on batteries. Also using headphones saves the batteries.

the metorites are few and far between, at least in my hunting experience. I have my best luck with clad ( modern coins called that because they are clad in copper, nickel etc ) at playgrounds around the playground equipment. One of the best forums I know of to ask questions and learn more than you'll ever need to know ( kinda like here! LOL ) is photografics.net/board/index.php?sid=f37a9808509b65d3ee46fc3ef4938a72Tell them I sent ya. The guys on that board are really super super nice! Welcome to your new addiction muhahahha

Hey John, that's where I just bought mine from. I went with the padded headphones, NiMH rechargable batteries, the battery charger and the carrying case. I'm working on carving some digging tools out of Maple right now. They do the whole thing out the door for $199.95. Don't even charge shipping for the extras. They also include the arm strap that others charge extra for. Ron

Oooooooooo wow Ron, that looks like it would be so much fun. I always wanted to get a metal detector. Seems to me it would be a great way to get some exercise too, just with the walking you have to do.

Yep John, if you are going to an area that has really mineralized soil, you want a detector that will ground balance for ya and help knock out the signals from the soil minerals. Mine does it automatically so I can't tell ya nuthin about how why etc lol. I use the BH SharpShooter II.

Yep thats the one, only mine is the Radio Shack version called the Discovery 3000, but both are made by Bounty Hunter. It was my back up detector, but became my main after my White's XLT was sold.

Well shoot! Thanks Sands, now you done it. I just told my hubby I want a metal detector for my birthday. LOL How's that for being catchy? I've always wanted one so I thought why not? And I'm going to see if my daughter will get one for my grandson. How could that be more perfect?

Holy dino doo Sands, that's a chunk of $$ there. What about the Whites, anyone got any thoughts on those? Hey Cher, I looked at metal detectors for a long time now and I just couldn't justify the expense on "another" hobby. The good units were just too expensive. That's why I decided to go for the Garrett Ace 250. At that price, I can afford to get two and have my wife go with me. I'm not looking to strike it rich, just have a little fun. The Whites are some really great units, but you pay for it. Ron

I'm not looking to strike it rich either but think it would be entertaining and something I could get my grandson into that might help get him away from those damn tv games and outside getting some exercise. I'm seriously looking at the one you have, did you find it hard to learn how to use it? Is it comfy on the arm? Did it live up to your expectations?

Hey Cher, I really like it so far. It is really light and easy to carry. I have been experiencing some MS activity for a few months and they tell me the stregth in my hands and arms is less than half what it was, and I'm not having any trouble carrying it. Hard to do too much now with winter and all, but I did go out yesterday and find a penny under the snow! Of course it was most likely mine to begin with so I guess that doesn't count as treasure. Ron
