My last smoke was in Jan of 1990....I quit cold turkey and to this day do not crave any ciggies. I now have a problem being around anyone who smokes...the smell bothers me a bit. I do not get any cravings being around smokers...just can't handle the bad smell and then I start to thinking...gee..did I smell like that too? I quit because I was ready to quit. Like so many others I too quit many times before. This time it was for real. My biggest problem when I did quit was what to do with my hands. Keep the hands busy and it will be easier I think. Just my 2 cents worth. Good luck on quitting..

I smoked 20 for 20 years too - until I landed in the emergency room unable to breathe. Now I'm on inhalers 3 times a day. (So I pick up a hobby that includes cutting rocks and silicates flying through the air...damn mask gets in the way!). I had tried to quit smoking, I SWEAR, a million times. My son even stuck the filters of my cigarettes in his ears to try and grose me out. Ha. Not even close enough to deter this addict.
Even with THAT experienc and a terrified husband hovering over me, it took Zyban, the patch and an anti-anxiety med. I LOVED SMOKING. I enjoyed every minute of it (except for that gagging, not being able to breath part).
Well, I haven't smoked for 4 years now and I still dream about smoking. I am just beginning to notice things like: when a smoker has been in the ladies room before me, I can still smell the smoke residue from their clothes 10 minutes later; that when I walk by an empty car at the grocery store I can tell it belongs to a smoker because the odor of stale smoke emanates from it; that my lungs seize up just walking past someone smoking outside the entrance to my worksite (just that brief exposure causes me hours of breathing problems now). I'm just hoping I don't end up with emphysema. This is bad enough.
So, if you can quit do. Before it's too late. I wish you the very best of luck. It sucks to go through and to have to find a way to deal with the emotions, and to find ways to deal with stress, but it will be the best thing you ever do for yourself.
But, if I ever end up with lung cancer - I'm heading straight to the tobacco store!

Thank you.... The day draws nigh and I am nervous already. I know about the feelings and emotions I will be going through AGAIN..... I do hope I have the strength to quit and surrender to tobacco. My quit date is set for June 26, 2006. Which is only 2 days away.... Battling depression doesn't help, but hey, I quit for 4 months once and I am very hopeful that I can at lease beat that. But also... like someone else who has posted here.... if I find out down the road that I have lung cancer or any other thing that will take my life to soon.... I will head straight to the store and grab a carton and smoke till I pass out. lol Well maybe not, but it is an outlet. Was wondering if a board could be made to just vent??? I know I would be writing on it!!! ;D

cpdad, I smoked for 35 years and was up to 2 packs-or more a day!Wellbutrin and the nicotine inhaler did it for me. I've quit and it's been over 3 years. My wife got COPD and Asthma plus a clot in her aorta and still smoked. She didn't want to quit even then but had too. She used the same thing, Welbutrin and the inhaler. You just have to decide to do it and stick with it!If you saw how my wife has to live most of the time you would toss your pack out the nearest window, and never think twice about it. Good luck, You can do it !
