Spacegold, if smashing rocks bothers you that much why are you polishing them in the first place? Why are you taking them out of their homes and forcing them into shapes you want and making them shine if they don't want to?
Wouldn't you be happier out in the middle of nowhere looking at them in their native habitat, enjoying their natural beauty and then leaving them where they are? Perhaps you can buy a big parcel of land and start a rock preserve where they will never be disturbed. You could go to Washington and lobby for "rocks rights" or something. Maybe blow up a few rock polishing clinics or go to a museum and break open all the rock display cases while yelling, "RUN FREE! RUN FREE!"
Can you not take a hint? Good grief.

I don't think the point is whether hammering is like sawing or even the forces of nature on some level, or whether the greatest respect for rocks is specimens, or cabs, or tumbles. The question is CONDUCT. SG's conduct. I don't care what side of the question SG is arguing or whether anyone thinks he has a point or not.
This discussion borders on denial. SG's conduct is the problem - not his opinion! He attacked riverbend he attacked me he attacked cpdad he attacks Don. He takes this safe and friendly place and makes it unsafe. What does he have to do to get banned? People get banned from other boards. Why is he still here??
The question is one of unacceptable conduct, and to even veer off into whether on not is it OK to hammer rocks is to lose sight of the fact that SG is attacking other members. That has got to be stopped.

Doesn't Mother Nature break some of her own rocks?....MrP HeeHee..............Consider erosion and the forces of nature.........Rocks are eroded and re-lithified over and over. I agree whole heartedly Rollingstone.......Humankind is a natural erosional force to be dealt with!! Bob

i think everyone here has started out busting rocks with hammer and chisel -- i know i did but when and if you want to move to cabs or slabs then you need a saw it took me a very long time to get my first saw so i could slab for cabs ----- what im tryin to say is if you hammer or saw it makes no dif. as long as you are enjoying the hobby and the end result -- if someone else does it dif. thats there choice --- respect it we are all friends here

I think a lot of it boils down to someone has something someone else wants and can't have. I can sympathize with that since I'm in the same boat. Probably 90% of the people on this board, including SG, have stuff I'm jealous of. Do I let it get me down? No. Why? Rocks can be bought with cash. Friends can't. I've already gotten lots of cheap and free rocks here. That's extremely kind. No one on any other forum has ever sent me anything. I had no reason to expect that to happen here. It just did. That says a lot about the quality of people on this board. Has a rock ever bought me anything? Nope. I've never even thrown a rock through a window in order to get to what's on the other side. I can't say a rock has ever given me anything except a moment of pleasure while admiring it's beauty.
Beauty is also in the eye of the beholder. Who is to say that faceting or cabbing or tumbling is the best way to bring the beauty out of a stone? Who can even say that slabbing and precutting is better than smashing before tumbling? They achieve two different looks. It's all up to what the person polishing wants to accomplish or can afford to. Don't even get me started on stone carving where everything not wanted is ground away to powder. I don't hold it against anybody as to how they treat stone to acheive their finished product and I don't think anyone else should either including SG.
Maybe we should petition to have the title of this thread changed to "Spacegold, Get used to it!" If you don't have the money and can't afford the fancy stuff to do with as you please then get used to it. If a rock you lust after belongs to someone else and they have something in mind for it that's different than you do get used to it. It's a fact of life and if you don't want to wind up friendless as well as rockless then get used to it.
Or just get used to being by yourself. One way or the other this is going to stop.

I'm not going to offer an opinion either way, cause this has already gotten waaaaay out of control. But i will say I have also been offended by some comments that were said to me in the past and I also stayed away from here for a few weeks because of it. And it wasn't Spacegold. he has helped me thru PM's and I appreciate it. If someone slams you for one reason or another, try not to lower yourself to their level. just sign off and play with your rocks any way you darn well please! enough said. I've had enough stress lately to last me a lifetime and also come here to unwind, but my blood pressure just rose again just reading all this feuding!

If I remember correctly, in your member preferences, you can ignore a member. You won't get PM's from them and I think it blocks you from seeing their posts. That might be a idea to look into if you are bothered by or are being bothered by another member.

I think you could do that in one of the earlier versions of the forum but it's not available anymore (at least I can't find anything).

This is the Rock Tumbling Hobby forum. Most stone needs to be broken down to tumbling size. This is how it works, this is what we do. No part of this bothers me and it realy shouldn't bother others. I've whacked both the cheep and the pricy to make some good tumbled specimens for decoration and appriciation. If I post a thread with some pictures of my work and amongst the few appreciators someone says "How could you smash up a great stone like that just for tumbling. You should have done this or that with it". They are saying that I'm just to stupid to do it their way. That's playground bully kid stuff and it needs to be left back on the playground. I come here to be with grown up's that can share and enjoy this craft together.

I love to cut rock- But I am not above using a hammer and a chisel- Heck alot of times I purchase rough that my lil ole WF just won't handle (without putting myself and my precious blades in danger) SO I use the hammer and chisel- I also like to hammer "questionable" material (stuff that I think may be fractured) I love the material that Don turns out- His tumbling achievments are what we should ALL strive for- and as for waste- I'm willing to bet there is a similiar abmount of wasted sludge in the bottom of my water tray after a cutting session-

Daniel is right... It's not about whether or not it's acceptable to smash rocks with a hammer. This has become an issue of one member who insists upon forcing his opinions/beliefs on others with no regard for congeniality. Space has been insulting Don at every opportunity and it's is unacceptable. Why does he do this? I think it's because Space feels his views are not only correct but that we should all adhere to those beliefs. If you follow that logic to it's conclusion then we should all consult with Space before doing anything with our rocks. I don't think so.
Yep... Stuff like this makes me stay away from this board. The sour taste it leaves me with I can do without. The board used to be a place where folks could just be themselves but I've seen lots of intolerance on here lately (have you seen the joke thread?). There's been lots of Liberal bashing (we all know what that implies) and highly opinionated political debates which have no place here. Take it somewhere else please. Why some people have to run down others is beyond me. It's definitely not my style and I certainly don't care to read that kind of crap here. If you all want to make this place a sh*thole like the rest of the internet that's fine, but I don't want any part of it.

Okay Dan, Don't you EVEN think about leaving again. You little rascal, you just stay put this time.
This board has a moderator, maybe someone could just bring this thread to his attention and let him do what he thinks will benefit his discussion board.
Earthdog, you are just too damn funny, I had to laugh outloud when I read your post. Everybody, have a great day!!!

Thanks Jamie. I'm not leaving. ....and I thought about keeping my mouth shut but dang it! My friends are getting their feelings hurt. I'm tired of the bashing going on here. Left wing, right wing, conservative, liberal, gay, or straight... in my opinion all should be welcome to come here without fear of being belittled or chastised for there beliefs or lifestyle. I know that many here feel the same... I will speak my mind because the perpetrators have been pretty loud lately. So... I'm not going anywhere but I can't keep silent anymore.

And here I was thinking that Earthdog was the official comic relief of the forum. ;D It never occured to me to put ED on ignore.
It's okay about Spacegold. He's started bashing me now. (Yes, the pun was intended.) I can swap insults with the best so he isn't even close to bothering me.

We've had people voice their opinions... if we dont agree with them, we just move on to someone else who's opinion we do agree with. So far, and luck be with me, I havent had any problems with anyone and everyone has been very nice, helpful, and generous. Thanks to all!!
