I have just sold my home and will soon be moving to an apartment (haven't choosen it yet, but am leaning towards a particular one). Any advice on the ins and outs of tumbling in an apartment?

If you're not on the ground floor, I'd suggest you fix up a box for your tumbler with some styrofoam insulation in the bottom to help absorb the sound. They aren't really that noisy so hopefully you won't bother anyone but it would help some.

Actually, I hope to be on the third floor: -If anyone (like kids) does something (break in, vandalize, etc.) it will probably be on the first floor, maybe the second. -Another of my weird hobbies is radio (shortwave, crystal, spy number stations, pirates, etc.) and reception is better higher up. -I like the view higher up -I can use the exercise.

If you play your music real loud for the first week or so then turn it down they probably will be so gratful they won't even mind the tumbler noise!

Cleaning the stones is going to be the main issue. Do it late at night and just throw the slop off your balcony

I will have a balcony, but don't know if that is how I will handle it! Third floor one bedroom in Garfield Heights, M-Day is set for March 29.

start saving your plastic milk/water containers then, this disposal issue may get a bit tricky. i can see you getting picked up by Homeland security for dumping Biohazardous material in an unauthorized area.
don't worry, we'll vouch for ya.

Probably just slow down to a few loads a year, let it dry out in my rubber basin, then break off the clay and dump it. After all, I will not have a lot of room for rocks anyway!

If you use a "sound diminishing" box as suggested be sure there are openings to allow air flow. And, DONT dump your spent grit down the sink or toilet drain!

If you can spare some room in a closet, that might help with the noise (which I doubt would be bad enough to bother your neighbors anyway). Also, I set my tumbler in a large aluminum roasting pan to contain any leaks. You might want to take this extra precaution if you can't avoid placing the tumbler in a carpeted area.
I use the milk-jug method for disposing of the waste slurry. I just dump the contents of the barrel through a strainer into a 2 gallon bucket, then transfer the slurry using a funnel to a milk jug.

Well, I will have two small closets and one large one. Think they are carpeted, though. Maybe I can get another basin for the tumbler...might cut the noise also.

hey Mazanec. i tumble in an apartment. my set up is a piece of thick foamcore board cut a bit larger than the base of my tumbler. under the foam core i have some real cushy foam that takes alot of noise out of the tumbler from the vibration. to further reduce the noise i have a large thick towel under the tumbler itself. the towel also has saved my butt a few times when the lid came off and everything went all over. i have made a quiet box for it but didnt like the feeling of not being able to see it tumble so i removed it. all in all, it just took some getting used to the sound. as for the water and left over stuff, i dump all my water into a larger bucket and when that fills i dump it outside. i havnt heard of any complaints so far. thats my experience. good luck!!!

Thanks! BTW, I will be right next to a park, but on the third floor (no elevators), which might make carrying buckets a bit of a problem. I figure I will give away some of my rocks to neighbors, so they understand what that faint "rumble" is, and I will just slow down my tumbling to several loads a year, letting the slurry dry in a basin and carrying the "cake" out in a garbage bag when it dries. Besides, I don't have room for a lot of rocks anyway.

If you have a tumbler with a rubber barrel and don't put it on the floor I don't think you will have any problems with the noise. As for the water you use to rinse. Put it in a bucket let the sludge settle carefully pour off the clear water and then after you have accumulated enough sludge that you don't have room to rinse it again, take it out when you take your trash out and either dump it in the trash, just throw the entire bucket away or dump it in an inconspicuous spot. That is what I do only when I dump my sludge I am able to dump it in the corner of my garden that I call a dead spot. I haven't gotten anything to grow in that corner for 3 years and my mother couldn't grow anything in that corner for 13 years. Tami

I should get a chance soon to see the actual apartment. I'll let you know more then.

I have thought it over, and I think I will take a sabbatical of a year or so before tumbling again. The apartment is proud of its quiet environment, and I have quite a few stones already. I want to become known, a friend, give away some of my stones, and settle in for some months before I start making weird noises 24/7. I will do some crystal radio hobbying for awhile first.

Will you have storage space? Meaning a locker in the basemet? Maybe you can find a plug in there somewhere and have the tumbler going in there? The noise shouldn't bother anyone if it's in the basement.
Maybe your landloard will let you use a utility closet somewhere in the building?

Again, I want to be an "old-timer" before I start imposing. The person below me has to get up at 5 AM, btw.

rent a storage building that has electricty.... voila... nice little rock place just for you. If no electricity, then just store your stuff there and do the tumbling at home
