Well went to polish tonight- Leather belt is fried- Still having problems with scratches showing up and now the leather is starting to seperate from the backing- I give up!!!! So what do I use to polish now? Freaking Diamond Belts (15,000 mesh) are like $100 each- Leather is cheaper but I have had nothing but trouble from the get go- Any other thoughts? Cork maybe? or has anyone seen those rubber belts made for Diamond Paste? Gosh I would hate to just toss the cabs into polish after the 1200 belt- Hmmmmmm

i had probs with my first leather belt cause i used too much water it stretched and started commin apart and it was hittin the back of the grinder so heres a hint i did when i got my second new one in two months hahaha
get an old any grit belt thats beat finished no more grit and put that inside the leather belt get it on the drum and run it --- now the tricky part this can only be done once so take your time get the grinder goin ( i know it prob has a bump in the grit belt under it) but after its runnin take a spray bottle and alittle at a time wet the leather belt wile its spinnin let it spin alittle and stop-it and see if the lump from the other belt is still there and keep doin this till the lump is gone and they look like they fit each other when they do let it spin for awile drying and leave on drum over nite to finish drying what this does is when they put these belts together the use glue and they stretch when you use them sooner or later they stretch to far and start commin off the backing and the glue fails around the edges and they start flappin so the center belts are alot better put together then the leather and they will stop the leather from stretching out and the belt will last alot longer
i tried the cork ( HATED THEM ) hahaha
never tried the diamond past but was thinkin i would someday i like the finish you get with 3000 wheel on the genie so im thinkin it will be even better with say 14000 i have a tube of it here one of these days im gonna try it

Sands- I told me to do this once before- And I tried it and failed miserably! I'm not sure I'm gonna go leather again- Just to touchy for me (says the guy who ate up his first 600 belt trying to course grind!!!) I see these Crystalbelts- made from some synthetic material- Basically it look like you charge them with a polish and let em dry or something- then use em I also found some DIamond belts for around $65 at Kingsley- Tex- Well the wife told me that I was not going to get rid of the machine- I was just going to figure out a way to make it work- (I guess that means I have permission to get some more belts?) I told her I was gonna run the cabs up to 1200 then toss em into the tumbler to polish! Ahh well guess I can't offer this machine up for sale just yet!

That sounds like a GREEN light to buy what you need Stefan...after all she's the boss...right? ;D
While I am in the market for a cabbing unit, I'm certainly not wishing that anyone give up on cabbing....glad to hear that you're keeping that machine....

OK I think I'm gonna try the Diamond route So what do I get- Here is what I have- 100 grit, 120 grit, 320 grit, 400 grit, 600 grite, 1200 grit, 1300 grit. SO What diamond belt should I get? 8000, 14000, 50000? I get to pick only one! Oh they also have a 3000- so which one would do it for me?

i end up with a 3000 on the genie and id say it polishes about 90% of the stones i cut with just that as last grit and no polish,, and if i have a stuburn stone i buff on eather leather or a felt type wheel with zam

3000 is the polish wheel on my Genie, too. Sands, it took me a while to try the canvas pad and the diamond paste, too...but WOW, what a great final buff polish you get! you gotta try it!

Stefan, could you get one of those cloth wheels and use a liquid mixture of polish on it? the one at the shop is on a flat lap but I bought one for home (haven't used it yet because I only have coarse grit wheel) but would that work? I'd think it would - can't see why not and they're peanuts each (even here in Canada)

Tweet- My grinder has expandable drumms- To put on a wheel would involve taking the thing apart- I got POed last night and took a diamond burr from my dremel and ground about half the leather off the belt- ( burned the $^$ outta my hand in the process) then took the DRY belt- wetted one of thos Sponge paintbrushes with a very thin Cerium Oxide polish mix and applied to the belt- I'll be damned if it didn't work- I think I may have decontaminated the belt after all- Then I took a bit of crazy glue (works on leather) and reglued the edges that were coming un-done- I also found this large Slow Cooker/ Griddle thing- so now I have a heat source for a dop pot- Now just to order some wax!!!! I am gonaa get this polishing thing down- even if it kills me!!! So a 3000 grid Diamond belt would be a good choice?

I didn't even try the canvas wheel. I just used Disc adhesive and slapped a leather 6" disc on there. Then I use a Cerium Oxide/Optical mix for polish.
