Nice to see some Spencer opal, there Shain! I was just through Spencer last Friday and again yesterday- picked up 5 lb of rough "opal bearing rock" and a nice jar of pieces culled down to color, I can hardly wait to start cutting that stuff up!
It was quite a trip- bought "miner direct" spencer opal, Prudent Man agate and Bruneau Jasper-
not to mention about 20 lbs of other misc stuff that was self-collected along the way, probably won't have time to put together a full trip report before my next run to Arizona this weekend.
but I really need to stop spending money on rocks!

Thanks guys, Ya that Blue Pietersite is so nice. I been hangin onto a large slab of it for about 5 years now and decided it was time to work it up. It very hipnotic and the color is like metal. I also like it becasue less than 1/3 is optical quartz. Giving that clear depth is very cool.
Rally, that Spencer is by far my fav. Ive seen allot of it, but rarely as nice as this piece is, it very flashy even in very low light. Make sure you post your photos of the stuff you got. It very fun to work for sure.

Well I started into my first attempt with Spencer opal last night, had a really nice piece in matrix that was about a full 1" circle that seemed to have good fire and looked to be pretty deep into the rhyolite. But after grinding down the matrix it proved to only be a couple mm thick and broke in half.
I'll be lucky if I get even a tiny piece from it in the end, at least I have about 5 more pounds of the stuff to play with when I get back next week...

R u using a flat lap? As i will work away the overburden to the fire layer on my grinder. Then take it to the flat lap and slowly work upto the full layer. ONce thats done and i am close, not fully to the layer. I will stablize it, or glue a backing slab to the flat surface. Both ways unsure more ddurablity to working it further and minimal breakage.
