When you see or hear the words "gem" or "jewel" do you think of a faceted gemstone or can these words also be used to describe cabochons or other jewelry?

Well my stupid opinion is that some cabs contain gem material as in a streak or a blotch occurrence I have not seen one that contained a jewel but that would be very cool. With that being said a description that included "gemmy cabochon" would not be out of line.

Thank you for your stupid opinion LOL. I was just curious if you having the word "gem" or "jewel" was misleading. Such as a wire wrapped cab. Would calling it a wire wrapped gem or jewel be misleading or would it just be considered a name. I wasnt thinking so much along the lines of the cab actually containing "gem" material. If you look up the words in a dictionary, it seems to refer more to a faceted stone. But yet further down in the descriptions, some also mention cabochons. It seems like most things concerning rocks can have multiple meanings. Its confusing at times.

When I think of gem or jewel I think of the faceted ones. Cabs to me are just cabs, cabochons , or rocks. But then most non-rock people don't know what a cabochon is. I think "stone" is a good generally accepted term.
These days, I call them rocks, even in cab form. That's what they are to me, before or after they are cabbed. It drives my mother in law nuts when I call finished wire wraps "rocks". Steve

hmmmm, good question! i guess when i hear the term "gem", i think of "gemstones", the traditional sort, you know the "birthstones", topaz, aquamarine, ruby, garnet, emerald, etc.
all the money stones! same for jewels.....and that really makes me think of faceted stuff. diamonds!
personally, i think every cab i craft or stone i tumble is my own personal "gem", but that's just my opinion. i'm in love with my rocks......

I agree when I hear Jewel, I think faceted precious stones.
when I hear gem... I think of faceted stones as well as other clear colored polished cabachons in settings... such as a carnelean.
other rocks I would consider cabs or stones (although stone covers all three really).
Maybe it's just a matter of opinion... but I wouldn't call it a cab a jewel, maybe a gem, depending on the type of stone... make sense? that's just me though.

I have been reading some books on gems and minerals lately. The jewelry industry got together and decided there is no such thing as semi-precious stones any more. All attractive stones are now called gemstones. No mention of jewels in any of the books I've read. That term might refer more to an actual piece of jewelry.

Huh - no semi-precious anymore? It was getting ridiculous with the amount of material that was considered semi-precious though. I still cringe when I hear Cubic Zirconia called semi-precious. As an April baby, I protest. Give me diamonds anyday!
I'd think of higher grade top-quality material or semi-precious stones when I hear gem. I've seen write-ups on jewelry pieces that described the stones as "Gem Quality". I understand that.
I will always think of jewels as set faceted stones...
