Hello friends! I have before me today 2 bags of tumble rough, Apache Tears in one and Lake Superior Agates in the other  Both are somewhat in the same ballpark as far as weight goes, but one is heavier than the other. All you have to do is tell me: A) which one is heavier and B) by how much The answer shall be in whole grams. The one who guesses the heaviest lot and the difference between the two wins both lots, plus a sweet slab of Peanut Wood  AND a few other goodies as well  If no one guesses dead on, then the one who guesses the heaviest lot and the closest difference _without_ going over wins it all! Nice contest Beef...you're always coming up with some nice contests, and some really nice goodies. Don't know grams and pounds....but I'm going to take a very blind guess.
Superior Agates are heavier by 658 grams.

Okay, this is a toughie because I have always had trouble with weight versus mass and or density but I can't pass up this challenge, so...
The Lake Superior Agates pouch is heavier than the Apache Tears pouch (agate has a heavier density than obsidian) and the difference between the two pouches in whole grams is 499 grams (based on a convoluted math formula that only my brain understands. :-))

BTW Beefjello, that slab of Peanut Wood is gorgeous. I wonder, does any one else see two figures--possibly hockey players or perhaps hunters camouflaged under bearskins--moving in opposite directions on that slab?
I also forgot to thank you in my original post here for offering such an intriguing game with such wonderful prizes.

Wow, Brian, cool contest! I think the Apache tears (the bag in the left side) are heavier with 94 grams than the red lakers. But the real "heavy" piece of this contest is that gorgeous slab! Yes, LadyB, I see the two hockey players and I wander where do they run 'cause all the pucks are between them  Thanks for the contest! Adrian |

Okay, this one is driving me nuts--or is it rocks. I'm still convinced that the agates are heavier than the Tears. But by how much? Agates average a density of 2.60 to 2.64. Obsidian has a density of 2.35 to 2.60. That means that the difference in density is anywhere from zero to 10%. Now Beefjello has already assured us that the two sacks are about the same weight but that one of them is definitely heavier SO the difference between the two cannot be zero.
Hmmm...now just for the sack of argument, let's say that each bag holds a pound of stones and 1 ounce = 28.3495231 grams, so each bag would weigh 453.5923696 grams but the agates have a heavier density so at most the difference would be 10% or 45 grams in favor of the agates. But what if the bags each hold two pounds of stones? Then we would have a total of 907.1847392 grams in each bag but 10% more for the agates would yield a difference of 91 grams (rounded off). But just suppose each bag held three pounds of stones. Somebody help me. I'm stuck in a conundrum--or is that corundum? Help! Is anybody out there. And who thought up this devilishly clever contest anyway?
I just need to know one thing, Beefjello. When the contest is over--in just about 94 hours now (rounded off), will you please post how the winner was able to figure out the answer. My obsessive-compulsive brain really, really wants to know. :-}

Okay, I know I said I would desist, but now that I have taken beefjello's advice and I am no longer thinking hard, here is my final answer. The Lake Superior Agates are heavier and the difference is by 1 gram! :-)

Well, this is kinda different (but cool)! Lady B kinda scrambled my brain a bit, so I am just going to guess before I too start thinking too much!?!
I'll say about 135 grams heavier on the Apache Tears - It looks like the bag has slightly more in it!
