Does anybody here remember that cartoon--Fractured Fairytales? You have to be a 'certain age' to remember them, but they were pretty funny. Anyway, here's the question: Why does my new 12# tumber consistently fracture everything I put into it? Breaks my heart, lost a lot of very pretty stuff so far. Here is what I've tried: Running it fuller, like 3/4 full running it with all like-sized rocks running it with varied sized rocks Always runs with same hardness rocks So where am I screwing up? Does anyone have any ideas for me to try?

Are you using plastic pellets to keep the stones from banging into each other?
Fractured Fairytails was from The Rocky and Bullwinkle show, along with Boris and Natasia, Dudley Dooright, and Professor Peabody ... set The Wayback Machine!

Holy crap--the WAYBACK machine!!!! Like the next step is------ underground!! ? I didn't think it was THAT long ago--- Anyway, I don't use pellets in the 60/90, and I've not gotten past the 60/90 due to the fracturing. Which breaks my heart at the wreckage. Then I stop that batch.

I find if I use alot of really small stuff, more or less filler, I fracture less. If you dont have alot of really small stones, (1/4" or so) then use broken glass from a tempered glass window, you know the kind that breaks up into lots of little pieces.
Good luck..................Tony

My Lortone 12# tumbler has a pretty weak motor so I can't run very full loads. As a result, I can sometimes get more fracturing too. I've pretty much solved the problem by doing what Tony has said and adding more smalls to the load but I also thicken the slurry by reusing the thickest part of the slurry from the previous load. This seems to coat the rocks with a thick layer of goo so they don't bash together quite so much....Mel

Try non-abrasive ceramic cylinders in a ratio of almopst 1/4 of mix. Acts like tiny rocks in mix and cushions in later stages.

Not much to add. I always start with used slurry, seems to jumpstart the grinding action (maybe additional surface/grit adhesion?) and I never have fracturing (then again I never noticed much fracturing without slurry. My 12#er(thumlers) runs slower than other members might deem optimal. I usually run it 5/8 to 3/4 full of rocks and a little less water than recommended(not quite up to the top layer of rocks, usually I stop adding water as soon as you can see it)...I would not use pellets in coarse stage. My theory is if they were meant to fracture let it happen early in the process.
i really suspect it is not you, it's the rough, unless you are running at a very high speed.

Boy do we have a bunch of old farts on this board. I think I remember my mom and dad talking about Rocky and Bullwinkle...
Just kidding. Count me in as one of old farts because I watched the show every afternoon as a kid when I got home from school.

I'd agree about RPM or lack of cushioning filler. I refuse to be called an old fart, and I remember the show! (I think it was in re-runs then, though.)

LOL chass
Lots of tiny small fillers, either ceramic or pea rock will prevent the larger ones from banging against each other so much.

Of course I remember Fractured Fairy Tales. I was more of a Banana Splits kid though. LOL Were you an official, card-carrying member of The Sour Grapes Club? I liked the Atom Ant and Secret Squirrel segments of The Banana Splits. "...Over hill and highway the Banana buggies go Fleegel, Bingo, Drooper, and Snork"Anyone remember Hobo Kelly?

Small stuff YES!-and something to jump-start the slurry including cellulose of some kind, paper or sawdust. Not too much water either-I start with water a little below the top layer of rock,Mike,

Marbles work too. If you can find them. Lots of marbles so the rocks won't bang. T

OK how about crusader rabbit. with Andy divine on the buster brown show. and the shoe i had a few of those shoes. what i do for filler is when I'm busting up the rocks to tumble i throw in all the pieces no matter how small. mike
