A friend brought me a hunk of some sort of chert/agate that a friend of his found here in the Berkeley hills, the finder was thinking it might be some kind of volcanic rock, but my guess is that its an "after the volcano" formation, probably deposited in a pocket or seam in a lahar or pyroclastic flow. In any case, whatever it is- I tried cutting a couple of slabettes off it, found it to be somewhat fractured, but workable once those broke up, and I managed to cut a little free-form cab out of it too; Slabettes and cab Cab sitting on the source rough My friend Clyde was really impressed, he said the finder would want to pay me for it, I told him to just let me keep one of the little slabs.

Pretty neat stuff. When I was a kid, my dad used to take me to hunt geodes, agate nodules and thundereggs in the Berkeley Hills. We used to find some really nice stuff and some of the nodules and T-eggs were big too....Mel

Really nice cab. It must be great to cab material you find locally. Don't know what the rock is but it obviously cabs up nice.
