Lol, how can you folks be afraid of corn?? Ham and grits is what earliest man ate! Just as soon as they started farming they were eating ham and grits... sausage and grits..... If it wasn't for grits man would have gone extinct after Toba exploded. Mankind got down to maybe 5 or 10 thousand total, but they werre eating grits.. and here we are!! It is in your genes!! Embrace grits!! T

Woodyrock - Lutefisk. Never heard of it but it does sound interesting. ;D That is the most God forsaken creation that humans could have ever come up with. HOW FREAKING HUNGRY could they be to eat that??? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lutefisk*shudder

Zenaswolf: You must come over to Poulsbo at Christmas and try some! The texture might be on the wild side, but trust me, if you ever saw hotdogs made the lutefisk would instantly seem quite good. Or, were you speaking of the hotdogs?

never tried grits- but I love corn- all corn- creamed, canned, frozen, on the cob, boiled, broiled, roasted, popped, puffed, raw, cow, sweet, indian, dried, cornnuts. I'm gonna have to see if any of the local stores carry grits- if not someone is gonna have to send me some.

Cp... an ex-bf's mom used to make grits using the ingredients you mentions... she's in South Carolina. Not bad, but I always felt my arteries hardening when I ate them Grits and Polenta are essentially the same thing... one is made from white corn, one from yellow (traditionally) but I can't remember which is which. As far as being scared of grits... my problem is usually that they are a bit bland, or the texture is weird... Similar problems as oatmeal or gruel or any other hot breakfasty cereal. I'll pass on the chitlins and tripe... ugh... can't get past the smell of either :/

Ok Kev, I'll be a guinea pig for you. I've never had grits in my life but my daughter-in-law loves them and she got my son eating them so they can't be all bad. *smile*

LOL Should have read more first. Lutefisk ... I'm Norwegian/Swede and you couldn't get me to eat that *stuff* for a million bucks. Woody, you forgot to mention that it's prepared with lye. Yes, lutefisk literally means lye fish.

I love grits! I learned about them from my ex MIL who was from Mississippi. I love them with cheese, but I also love to fix them up like you do Cream of Wheat or oatmeal.........sweet with cream, like brown sugar or maple syrup. Yummy! Earthdog loves it when I make a big dish of grits with lots of butter, topped with fried eggs. I love cornmeal mush, too. I eat it the same way I do grits.
One thing I found out I love is (and only you true southerners will know about them)........ BOILED PEANUTS! Man oh man, do I love them! So do my kids. My ex MIL turned us on to them, too. Not too easy to find "up" here, but when I do, watch out!
Met a relative from Alabama..............they love cane syrup vs maple syrup. I tried it. It's good, but when you're used to maple syrup, it's not quite the same on pancakes, etc.
It's fun trying new things......................hey, anyone ever had Rocky Mountain Oysters? Tastes just like liver............ ;D

Really? You didn't like them? I know they don't taste like roasted peanuts, but they are actually a legume, so they taste more like beans do, I think. I'll take 'em!
